“To trace out by minute investigation” is the thought embodied in “searched diligently.” The word, without the prefix, occurs in John 5: 39 ; 7: 52; Rom. 8: 27; 1 Cor. 2: 10; 1 Pet. 1: 11; Rev. 2:23, and is used in a general way of dogs tracking game, spies surveying a country, a person uncovering a vessel, and of a lion seeking prey. The dili gent student of the Word is one who gains much spoil hy his search (Psa. 119:162)., “Sounded Out”— (Execheomai) 1 Thess. 1:8 The word means “an echo.” The saints at Thessalonica “sounded out” the truth of God’s Word in living character and in live testimony. A true ministry is the echo of the Divine-Voice as made known in the Word. In conclusion we may say of the Word, in this Book are found the mind of God, the state of man, the way of sal vation, the doom of sinners, and the happiness of believers. Its doctrines are holy, its precepts are binding, its stories are true, and its decisions are immutable. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy. It contains light to direct you, food to support you, and comfort to cheer you. It is the traveler’s map, the pilgrim’s staff, the pilot’s compass, the soldier’s sword, and the Christian’s charter. Here Paradise is restored, heaven opened, and the gates of hell disclosed. Christ is its grand object, our good its design, and the glory of God its end. It should fill the memory, rule the heart, and guide the feet. Read it slowly, frequently, prayerfully. It is a mine of wealth, a Paradise of glory, and a river of pleasure. It is given you in life, will he opened at the judgment, and be remembered forever. It involves'the highest responsibility, will reward the laborer, and condemns all who trifle with its contents. AN ADVENT HYMN “I will come again” (John 14: 3) Until He come! Each Advent season bringeth A herald’s tidings of His sure return; And thro’ night’s gloom the morning chime out-ringeth, Making our hearts to burn, For this same Jesus soon will come a g a in ^ With light of day— clear shining after rain. Only until He come shall partings sunder; Only until He come shall griefs distress; Only until He come shall sad hearts wonder Why such “strange things” oppress; Only until He come— then all made plain; Trust thro’ the “little while” of loss and pain. Until He come! Oft as His loved ones gather To “show His death,” remembering their Lord, Risen, ascended, crowned by God the Father—■ They tell forth that glad word: “Jesus will come,” their Bridegroom-King, to reign; Join in the Advent song—£ji‘He comes again.” Oh, let each heart awake, with hope replying, “Even so come, Lord Jesus, quickly come” : The long-drawn ages for that day are sighing, When joy shouts “harvest home!” Into the shadows of the world’s dark night, Come, O Thou King of Love, Thou Lord of Light! — J. H. S. (in “Life of Faith” ).
