APRIL 2023
Years ago, I stood at the bus stop waiting for my kids to hop off after school. Everything seemed normal at first. One sibling stepped down, then another, and then the third. Finally, my fourth child rushed down the steps — they were crying their eyes out! OH, YOU BULLIED ONE OF MY KIDS? YOU’D BETTER START RUNNING!
During the glasses incident, they all stood up for their bullied sibling — then started fighting the minute we got home! Plenty of similar things happened over the years. If someone picked on one sibling, the others were all over it. I’m proud that my kids’ loyalty showed up early because it took a while for those feelings to grow between me and my sister, Abby. Our long journey toward
common ground probably had to do with the fact that I’m four years older and a bit bossy. Whenever we played school, I always had to be the teacher! I still remember thinking, “ She can’t be the teacher — what’s a baby like her going to teach a big kid like me?” Abby and I may not have helped each other much when we were kids, but she grew up to be one of the most caring, nurturing, and helpful people I know. She and her husband have four kids, including one they adopted. Their little girl has a lot of medical needs, so my sister went back to school to learn the best ways to care for her. Ironically, she’s the student again, but now she’s studying to be a nurse. When I discovered April 10 is National Siblings Day, my first thought was that I’m proud of my sister and my kids. They turned out alright despite my imperfections! I think that everyone can learn a thing or two from the five of them. If we all take a few minutes each day to help someone else — whether that person is our sibling, child, friend, or a stranger — we’ll make the world a kinder place.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, hurrying over. “Are you okay?”
They wouldn’t tell me a thing. When my kids are upset, their first instinct is to clam up. Finally, after minutes of coaxing, I learned the real problem. “My — my glasses!” they hiccupped. They held out a pair of broken frames.
They were terrified they would be in trouble. I was a single parent at the time, and glasses were expensive! Of course, I was more worried than anything. But my crying kiddo was too proud to tell me what happened. Fortunately, their siblings let loose once the five of us made it to the car.
“It was a bully!” they told me. “He started it, and then he broke the glasses!”
The bully got what he deserved — and I thanked God for sibling loyalty.
Sometimes, parenting multiple kids makes me feel like a general overseeing four armies on a battlefield. One day, Jessica’s Army and Katie’s Army will form an alliance. The next day, they’ll be at each other's throats, and Katie’s troops will be best friends with John’s! My kids’ allegiances are constantly shifting. But there’s one thing they’ve never been willing to tolerate: Someone outside their little band of four threatening one of their siblings.

INTERNET SAFETY 101
Technology surrounds us now more than ever. There are always new apps in the app store, new games, and countless social media posts. Today, we also see children spending more time on the internet. But using these platforms comes with risks and responsibility — is your child ready to navigate them? Talk to your child about online dangers. Before giving your child permission to use the internet or buying them a smartphone, they must understand the different types of online dangers. There are many harmful things on the internet your children do not need to see. Talk to them about phishing, piracy, obscenity, online predators, cyberbullying, revealing personal information, and how people may not be who they say they are. Set standards and boundaries for internet/phone use. What sites are they allowed to get on? Which social media programs are they allowed to visit? Is there any information you would want them to keep private? How long or often can they be on the internet? Don’t wait until something terrible happens to begin implementing online safety rules. Make guidelines proactively for your children to follow so they know what is expected of them. Encourage your children to talk to you. Unfortunately, around 60% of kids claim they hardly talk to their parents about what they’re experiencing online. Therefore, your children must know they can come to you instead of hiding their concerns. Remember that your child may fear you’ll be angry with them if something questionable happens, so keep an open mind and understand your child’s situation. This will encourage them to come to you more often if a problem occurs. By implementing an open line of communication, informing them about the dangers of the internet, and setting boundaries, your child will have all the tools they need to safely use the internet and social media. Be aware of what they are doing and check their phones periodically. However, if you would like more resources on how to teach your child about internet safety, you can find tons of information online!

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE! HOW TO PROPERLY RECYCLE YOUR ELECTRONICS
When you think of recycling, you may think of the blue bins you use to recycle plastic, paper, cardboard, or glass. But did you know that you can also recycle electronics and other devices? Here are some statistics about electronic waste (e-waste). • Around 12% of our electronics are appropriately recycled each year. This means that over 80% of devices are put in the garbage or sent to Asia or Africa to be burned. However, burning these devices releases harmful toxins in the air that can affect us, other living organisms, and the environment. • The most hazardous electronic toxins are mercury, lead, arsenic, cadmium, selenium, chromium, and flame retardants. • E-waste is increasing yearly — we generate around 40 million tons worldwide. • Our cellphones are filled with precious metals such as gold and silver. The U.S. throws out $60 million worth of these metals each year. What electronic devices can you recycle? You can recycle computers, laptops, monitors, cellphones, TVs, radios, tablets, printers, and other devices. But that’s not all! You can also recycle air
conditioners, heaters, microwaves, digital cameras, circuit boards, VCR/DVD players, calculators, and more.
How can you reduce, reuse, and recycle these devices? If your electronics are still in good condition and function properly, you can donate them to friends, charities, or community outreach programs. Some cellular companies allow you to turn in your old phone when you buy a new one — and you can even get some money back if your phone isn’t in shambles! Just be sure your personal information and data are wiped from your devices before giving them away. You can also send your electronics to a specialized facility that will wipe your data and recycle your devices. Search online for electronic recycling in your area to find businesses and organizations that offer this service. However, ensure that whatever facility you use is environmentally friendly. So, the next time you upgrade to a new phone, tablet, or computer, or when you get a new microwave and other electronic devices, recycle or donate them! The environment will thank you for it.
