NAM: Manufacturing Continues Expansion, Employment Gains Slow According to the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), manufacturing employment increased by 3,000 jobs in June after declining by 2,000 in May, according to the latest economic data. Overall, nonfarm payroll em- ployment rose by 57,000 jobs during the month, coming in below expectations. Meanwhile, the unemployment rate edged down from 4.3 percent to 4.2 percent, while the la- bor force participation rate declined 0.3 percentage points to 61.5 percent, its lowest level in more than five years.

The June employment report also included downward revisions for previous months. Nonfarm employment for April and May was revised lower by a combined 74,000 jobs, while manufacturing employment for those two months was revised to a decline of 3,000 jobs. Over the past year, the manufacturing sector has shed 38,000 jobs. Manufacturing activity continued to expand in June for the sixth consecutive month, although at a slower pace. The Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) Manufactur- ing PMI registered 53.3 percent, down from 54.0 percent in May. New orders and output also expanded at a slower pace, while the New Export Orders Index moved into con- traction after expanding in May. The ISM Prices Index fell 9.1 percentage points in June to 73.0 percent, following a decline in May and marking its largest drop since July 2022. Demand indicators re- mained broadly positive, and 64 percent of surveyed man- ufacturers reported they were hiring. That marks a rever- sal from the beginning of the year, when 66 percent of respondents said they were managing head counts. Manufacturing job openings also moved higher in May, increasing by 33,000 to 529,000. The manufacturing job openings rate rose to 4.0 percent, up from 3.8 percent in April and 3.1 percent one year earlier. Meanwhile, the man- ufacturing hires rate remained unchanged at 2.3 percent, while the separations rate, including quits, layoffs, dis- charges, and other separationsheld steady at 2.2 percent. Job openings remained above the 2025 average. Across the broader economy, total job openings edged up by 9,000 to 7.6 million in May. Much of that increase came from smaller establishments, with companies employing 10 to 49 workers hiring 258,000 employees during the month.
