Case Study Creating online learning community across the fields of practice
Summary
As part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic community-based services across the Trust have had to adopt different ways of working which resulted in a reduction of student placement capacity within some teams. Cheshire & Wirral Partnership Trust have utilised investment in technology to increase first year pre-registration student nurse placement capacity, across all fields, within inpatient and community-based settings. This has been facilitated through the provision of dedicated student laptops accompanied by a revised Future Nurse Student Induction booklet and provision of a Clinical Skills booklet.
Key Aims
To increase capacity within community based clinical services to provide first year pre-registration student nurses from all fields with access a range of placement opportunities that enable them to effectively achieve their learning objectives. To ensure students have sufficient access to clinical records and resources and learning opportunities whilst undertaking community-based placements with services that are utilising increased remote working practices as part of their service delivery.
Resources
We utilised the Practice Education Project Officer to review all planned student nurse allocations for the next 12 months and the Practice Education Facilitator (PEF) reviewed the current placement capacity within the Teams that had been adjusted as part of the COVID-19 response, including the reasons that had been provided to temporarily reduce placement capacity. A database of laptop asset numbers and allocation has been devised in order to track and review usage of the devices.
How It Works
A standard operating procedure was devised in collaboration with ICT services. The initial challenge was deciding how to prioritise laptop usage for the teams, and this was informed by the review of the reasons provided by clinical teams to support a temporary reduction in student allocations to community-based teams during the initial COVID-19 response. We also needed to consider how we were going to enable students to access laptops and return them at the end of their placement
