Key Outcomes
The utilisation of laptops and supportive resources has commenced but is still in the early stages therefore the impact on placement capacity is yet to be fully realised. Placement capacity for pre-registration student nurses across the trust as a whole has increased following the implementation of this project as follows:
Placement Capacity during the Covid response: • Community 48 / Ward 55 [Total 103]
Placement capacity following roll out Student Laptops and remote and virtual practice: • Community 59 / Ward 58 [Total 117]
Positive feedback has also been received from both students and practitioners/team managers
The provision of a student laptop has been invaluable to our student placement experience as our offices are all primarily resourced with docking stations for laptops since the IT rollout. This has meant the student can utilise any desk to access their laptop. More importantly given the context of the pandemic we are trying to maintain safe staffing levels within the office, by rotating staff who can work from home.
“Having the student laptop has meant that the student can work from home and dial into Microsoft teams for our Team meeting. Students have also been able to share digital resources with patients on patient visits – which has enhanced the interaction.” Team Manager — CWP
Key Learning
The provision of laptops has been integral to the continued support of Learners in the practice environment, not only to maintain and increase capacity but also to realise new ways of working in relation to clinical service delivery.
Sustainability & Next Steps
• Governance structure in place to review usage and dissemination of laptops. • Asset tracking process in place to ensure laptops can be safely deployed and returned. • To consider use of Placement Tariff if more laptops are required. • Updated Information Communications Technology (ICT) Acceptable Usage Policy (AUP).
