Since its earliest days, when it was known as ‘the nature cure’, naturopaths have always focused on healing from a purely natural perspective. Today, naturopathy has developed into a highly effective evidence-based form of natural medicine. Naturopathy ... Evidence Based Natural Medicine

• Musculoskeletal conditions: such as sarcopenia or arthritis, respond well to anti-inflammatory diet plans and herbal intervention. • Gastrointestinal disorders: including gastric reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, and food sensitivities. Improving gut health also plays a key role in recovery from fatigue, autoimmune conditions and mental disorders. • Mental health: for those not requiring critical care, naturopaths may provide basic counselling and evidence-based nutritional and herbal medicines for the treatment of mild to moderate mood disorders including anxiety and depression. • Performance optimisation: Strong evidence shows dietary modification, supplements and herbal medicines boost cognitive function and physical performance. Athletes, gamers and businesspeople leading stressful and busy lives can benefit from seeing a qualified naturopath for cognition and physical performance. A qualified naturopath will promote an evidence-based approach to practice and know how to work safely alongside other medical practitioners to provide a best- practice approach for health. Naturopaths can provide both a primary and synergistic approach to medicine, thus enabling a greater therapeutic outcome for their clients. Matt Steinacher is a highly qualified and educated naturopath and sports nutritionist who has actively practised natural medicine for over 20 years. www.viveclinic.com.au

• Cardiovascular disease: by reducing inflammation, cortisol and stress, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure. • Diabetes: individualised nutritional planning, and exercise to stabilise blood glucose and possibly minimise insulin requirements. • Weight loss or gain: through diet and exercise planning, plus emotional challenges addressed via counselling and coaching. • Immune disorders (including autoimmune): infections, and inflammation, are greatly influenced by diet and lifestyle. • Cancer: Scope exists for evidence- based adjunctive therapy in most cancers, especially for those undergoing chemotherapy and/or radiography. A naturopath can also provide nutrition plans specific for recovery, energy, immunity, nerve and gastrointestinal health while undergoing cancer therapy. People undergoing chemotherapy are usually unable to maintain a normal diet, so individualised diet plans can prevent nutritional deficiencies. • Hormonal imbalances: including menopause, infertility and premenstrual disorders, can be modified with condition-specific herbal medicines.

Hippocrates (460-370 BC), known as ‘the father of medicine’, first highlighted the impact of our environment, diet and lifestyle as factors contributing to disease. Naturopathy grew in popularity throughout the 18th century in Europe and the USA, and in Australia during the 1970s. Naturopaths could be considered the general practitioners of natural medicine with their education and experience, focusing on a broad range of subjects - anatomy, physiology, biological chemistry, clinical nutrition and medicine, pharmacology, and herbal medicine. Consulting a naturopath Around five million naturopathic consultations occur each year in Australia. Appointments typically combine a thorough case history with functional and conventional blood testing to identify which body processes are malfunctioning. This informs evidence-based prescription of safe and effective nutritional and herbal medicines. Counselling, lifestyle, sleep, movement, and exercise may also be included as part of the prescription. Naturopathic consultations are typically at least one hour, enabling trust, empathy and understanding of both psychological and physiological challenges. Naturopathy can be of benefit for many disorders, including but not limited to:

Guard Your Brain Health

Nootropics is a medical term used to define a variety of substances that support and enhance cognitive function, thinking, learning and memory. Nootropics include some medicinal prescription drugs and an increasing number of natural substances, primarily antioxidant nutrients, amino acids and herbs. Here are the ones to look for. Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) A staple of Ayurveda, the centuries-old healing tradition practised in India, ashwagandha improves psychological balance and wellbeing by increasing cognitive ability, improving sleep Cutting-edge research into nootropic nutrients and herbs shows that they improve cognition, memory and mental alertness.

adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the brain, which boosts the transfer of energy, blood and oxygen to all cells in the body. This action also has benefits for heart and brain health, with small-scale studies suggesting a potential role in recovery from brain injuries. As an adaptogenic herb, cordyceps regulates mood disorders, stress and anxiety. Folic acid Folic acid is probably best known for its ability to prevent birth defects; however, a growing body of research points to its critical role in nervous system health, especially in supporting brain health and both short- and long-term memory. There is also evidence of its importance to the ageing brain, especially in mental and emotional balance and motor function. Nutrient-dense greens, such as alfalfa, wheatgrass and spinach, are all excellent sources of folic acid. Lion’s mane (Hericium erinaceus) This medicinal mushroom is rich in antioxidants and plays a role in regulating cortisol levels which rise during stressful periods, as well as having been shown to have potent effect on cognitive function and memory and increasing overall vitality and energy and having a mild pain-relieving effect. Research shows that taking lion’s mane boosts Long used in traditional Chinese medicine to improve brain function, reduce brain fatigue and speed recovery from illness and debility, this is an adaptogenic herb, which means that it helps the body to adapt to stress and maintain mental focus during difficult times. concentrated form as a nootropic, with studies showing that it improves memory and focus, without putting the body under stress or causing jitters. L-theanine has been shown to increase the alpha-waves in the brain, which is the state that encourages creativity, deep concentration and lateral thinking. Medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) Derived from coconut oil, medium-chain triglycerides are a must-have in any brain-boosting diet. They have been shown to reduce the ageing process in the brain, and to reduce ‘brain fog’ and increase speed of recall and response to stimuli. This is largely due to MCTs’ beneficial effects on the digestive system, which is closely linked to cognition and mood. N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC) This is an important amino acid, which the body requires to make glutathione, an antioxidant that is needed for a wide range of metabolic functions to occur correctly. It plays a specific role in liver detoxification and in simultaneously increasing the brain neurotransmitter glutamate and reducing toxic inflammation that damages brain cells and tissue.

Rhodiola (Rhodiola rosea) Another adaptogenic herb, research shows that rhodiola not only boosts mood and mental stamina and promotes calm in everyday life, but it is also especially effective in preventing burnout and anxiety in people who are in excessively stressful situations, such as students taking final exams. It also boosts alertness, attention, and motor function.

Mighty Magnesium

While it doesn’t hit the news as often as calcium and iron, magnesium may be one of the most important minerals for good health.

Your body contains a very small amount of magnesium – less than 30 grams – but this mineral is vital for almost all body functions. Even more important is the fact that most people are likely to be deficient in magnesium because it is easily depleted in the body. Echinacea

There are three species of echinacea: Echinacea angustifolia, E. purpurea and E. pallida . The first two are most widely used and researched for medicinal purposes. Both the roots and leaves of echinacea are used to make herbal medicines to prevent and treat colds, flu, nasal congestion and a sore throat; it can be administered as a liquid extract, tablets and capsules, on its own or with other synergistic plants. Echinacea is an immune stimulant, meaning that it helps strengthen the body’s natural immune response and increase resistance to infection. It has been shown to be an effective antiviral agent, against the herpes virus and to noticeably increase phagocytosis, the process by which foreign bodies are engulfed by the body’s protective immune cells. It is particularly favoured for treating the all-too-common cold, restoring the body to health quickly while helping the immune system to fight off other secondary infections which often strike when the body’s systems are overwhelmed. Health professionals recommend starting to take echinacea right at the onset, within 24 hours of the first symptom. No adverse side effects have been reported from taking echinacea; however, speak with your health professional before using it for prolonged periods.

Green Goodness Enhanced Yes, it is easy to be green – new innovative organic tablets offer on the go nutritious convenience

Green superfoods are a must-have for anyone who cares about their health and wants to feel their best. They are a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, trace elements, essential fatty acids, prebiotics and probiotics, and will help to improve cognitive and physical performance. Their well-rounded and all-natural nutritional profile makes them an appealing alternative to more traditional synthetic multivitamins. What to look for When choosing a greens product, you should examine not only what the ingredients are, their quality, and check that the density of active ingredients is sufficient to provide functional benefits. Wheat grass: Wheatgrass is so beneficial because of its dense and varied combination of nutrients and enzymes. It’s even colloquially known as ‘green blood’, because it contains such high and nourishing levels of chlorophyll, a plant pigment used in photosynthesis. Barley grass: Its nutritional profile is similar to wheat grass, but there are important differences that make both ingredients worth seeking out. Barley

grass has 30 times the thiamine and also contains five times the iron content of spinach and is high in vitamins C, E, K, folic acid, magnesium and a host of other health-boosting substances, including glutamic acid, which reduces cravings for sugar, alcohol, coffee and nicotine. Chlorella: As an algae, chlorella possesses distinct properties not commonly found in other plants. It is a valuable source of vitamin D, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids - nutrients that are often lacking in plant-based diets. For vegans and vegetarians, chlorella offers a natural way to obtain these essential nutrients. Additionally, chlorella is renowned for its detoxifying properties, making it an ideal addition to any wellness routine. Marine Plant Minerals: These minerals are sourced from Lithothamnium calcareum , a type of red seaweed that grows in the mineral-rich marine environment that boast an impressive array of calcium, magnesium and 70 other trace minerals that are crucial for maintaining healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. Organic Living

Do you know the important difference between products that are labelled ‘organic’ and ‘ certified organic ’?

Choosing certified organic products is an easy, natural, and practical way to care for our planet and your future. A passion for healthy, wholesome living and respect for the world around us lie at the heart of organics. Choosing certified organic products is important for anyone who is seeking a healthier way of life, and it makes it so much easier to make better choices about food and drink, health and beauty, babycare, petcare, gardening, home, office and clothing purchases. Understanding the difference There is currently no domestic regulation surrounding the term ‘organic’ in Australia, which means that some products labelled ‘organic’ simply may not be what they say they are. For example, a product claiming to be organic could contain as little as two percent of organic ingredients, while other ingredients could have been produced using synthetic chemicals. However, products labelled ‘certified organic’ have been put through a rigorous certification process to ensure that they meet an approved set of standards, such as the Australian Certified Organic Standard (ACOS). This means that every certified organic farm, product, and service must have had each part of their supply chain independently and third party- verified by a certification body. This verification ensures that everything is examined, from the growth of the produce in the field, to the sourcing of additional ingredients, manufacturing, and processing procedures, all the way through to getting the products into stores. Only by choosing products labelled ‘certified organic’ can you be sure that you are buying truly organic products and supporting certified organic producers. September is Australian Organic Awareness Month – AOAM, for short – and it is our country’s largest campaign promoting

the Australian certified organic industry. Led by the peak industry body Australian Organic Limited, AOAM aims to raise awareness

of certified organic products, brands, and businesses, while also educating consumers about the importance of looking for certified organic logos on their organic purchases. Join in this September by supporting your favourite certified organic brands and businesses like Go Vita, and sharing your stories on social media. Visit www.whyorganic.com.au to find out more.

Why Certified Organic?

chemicals are removed when washing non- organic strawberries in tap water. Toxic chemicals and pesticides are not permitted in organic foods. farming systems emit up to 40 percent less carbon emissions than non- organic systems. • No more than 1,500 birds are permitted per hectare for certified organic chickens, but non-organic • Numerous long-term trials show organic

How Hemp Can Save the Planet

RECIPE

Hemp is not just a nutrition powerhouse; it can preserve the Earth and reduce our dependence on fossil fuels.

The environmental benefits of hemp cultivation are exciting and far-reaching. Reduces carbon emissions: Carbon sequestration is the process by which a plant absorbs excess carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and stores it; effectively, it is how plants purify the air. All plants do this, but some are faster and more effective at it. For example, hemp plants are fast-growing and mature in 90-100 days, compared with pine trees, which take 20 years to mature. This rapid growth rate means that hemp plants capture approximately 10 times more carbon dioxide than pine trees. Potential fuel: Preliminary research indicates that hemp seed oil can be converted into a sustainable biodiesel fuel, while the rest of the plant can be used to make ethanol, another form of fuel, two important new developments which have the potential to significantly reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. Biodiesel fuels are better for the environment and create less greenhouse gas emissions. Soil doctor: Hemp is not just nutritious for humans, it also supports regenerative farming practice by improving soil fertility. A hardy plant, hemp requires less fertiliser and water than many other crops. This hardiness means hemp can be grown almost anywhere, making it a cash-producing crop that can be

cultivated in disadvantaged countries with limited water and agricultural services. It is also deep-rooted, which means it aids in crop rotation by creating a loose, friable soil, and reduces erosion. Multi-tasking miracle: Every single part of the hemp plant is useable – roots, seeds, flowers, fruit, fibre and leaves – and for an enormous variety of applications. For example, hemp can be used to make fabric, textiles, paper, cardboard and rope, plus steel, wood and bioplastic alternatives, and even a fire-resistant form of bricks to build houses. Hemp building materials are high in insulation capability, meaning they also have the advantage of greatly reducing energy consumption in future buildings. Healthy hemp: Hemp seeds are a great source of plant-based protein, making them an excellent choice for vegetarians and vegans looking to meet their protein needs. They’re also abundant in essential fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-6, which are crucial for maintaining heart

Collagen Plus The ketogenic – or ‘keto’ diet – is popular for its ability to create rapid weight loss, especially of the adipose belly fat which is considered most dangerous. Low in carbohydrates and high in protein and (zucchini, cucumber, celery, asparagus). There will possibly be some Ketogenic diets speed weight loss and are good for your heart! However, if you follow this diet you may need to take special nutrients.

healthy fats, the keto diet improves appetite control by increasing satiety, and has benefits for heart health, because it lowers LDL (‘bad’ cholesterol), while simultaneously elevating triglycerides. What happens during ketosis? When your carbohydrate intake is low, your body breaks down stored fat for energy instead, using a metabolic process called ketosis. During ketosis, ketones are produced which fuel the body and brain with energy. Ketosis leads to increased weight loss, because the body is burning fat at a higher rate than usual. This metabolic state usually kicks in after three to four days of restricting carbohydrate intake. A keto diet will certainly help you reach a weight loss goal sooner, but it does have a few downsides. One is that it is quite limiting – in order to be effective, the dieter needs to eat no more than 25 to 50 grams of carbohydrates daily. Foods like nuts and seeds will need to be carefully limited. The focus is on meat (preferably wild-caught), eggs, cheese, healthy oils (olive, avocado, coconut), avocadoes, non-starchy vegetables

symptoms resulting from the altered metabolic state, collectively nicknamed ‘the keto flu’, including loss of appetite, nausea, constipation and bad breath (halitosis). Also, given that any diet based on eliminating

or dramatically reducing one or more entire food groups, may lead to nutritional deficiencies, supplements and multivitamins are recommended. Of particular importance are key electrolytes and collagen, which work in synergy to hydrate the body and replenish minerals lost during ketosis, as well as supporting hair, skin and nail health. Combining electrolytes with collagen protein helps to improve absorption and utilisation of protein, while also supporting overall health and wellness.

Coconut aminos , to be precise. Here are the top six coconut amino sauces you need in your kitchen, right now. Soy sauce is a staple in many cultural cuisines, especially Asian food; however, not everyone can tolerate or digest soy products. The good news is that there are delicious free from key allergens (soy, gluten, dairy, tree nuts, peanuts), FODMAP-friendly and certified organic alternatives. These are the ones ranked the best by the Go Vita team:

Naked Coconut Amino Sauce: Certified FODMAP friendly, just fermented nectar and sea salt: perfect for marinating, basting, dipping and pouring. Original Coconut Amino Sauce: The famous original not-soy sauce, much loved for its rich tangy flavour. Coconut Amino BBQ Sauce: A classic sauce including garlic, that adds magic to sauteed mushrooms. Vegan Fysh Sauce Cocominos: A plant-powered version of an iconic seasoning sauce, essential for an authentic vegan laksa! Coconut Sweet Chilli Sauce: A dark, spicy- salty blend with garlic and bird’s eye chilli. Coconut Teriyaki Sauce: A tasty alternative to traditional Japanese-style teriyaki sauce.

Shake It Up

As well as providing protein and nutrients, meal replacement shakes are high in fibre, to improve digestion. Plus, they have been proven to help weight loss.

What is a meal replacement shake? Meal replacement shakes are designed to replace one or more daily meals. Every shake contains the necessary vitamins, minerals, protein and fibre found in a healthy, real-food meal. By replacing at least one meal a day with a shake, you can easily reduce your daily calorie intake, enabling your body to achieve a calorie deficit by using more calories than you consume. How does a meal replacement shake differ from a protein powder? Food Standards Australia and New Zealand defines the amounts of protein, calories, vitamins and minerals required to replace a meal, and classifies these products as Formulated Meal Replacements. To be classified as such, the shake needs to deliver a certain amount calories, protein and specific vitamin and minerals that would be found in a standard meal. A stand- alone protein powder, however, does not necessarily contain fibre, vitamins, minerals or the right number of calories. Studies show that a partial meal replacement diet can achieve up to seven percent of weight loss goals in the first three months - nearly double the success of trying to lose weight without the meal replacement products.

What benefits do meal replacement shakes provide? Meal replacement shakes are helpful for pre- and post- bariatric surgery, weight management and weight loss and to support gut health problems, including coeliac disease and irritable bowel syndrome. They can help diabetics, by reducing sugar intake, and anyone recovering from surgery or illness, by increasing protein intake and minimising muscle wastage. Go Vita loves … Progranics Meal Replacement Shake , a low sugar, plant-based, dairy- free formula that has been scientifically formulated for weight management and safe, effective weight loss. Proganics meal replacement shakes deliver at least 25g of protein per serve while being a good source of fibre to keep you feeling full. They provide adequate vitamins and minerals and healthy fats for energy and brain health while supporting your metabolism. Proganics meal replacement shakes contain prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes for gut health.

IN PROFILE

The Story of Baresop Change the world and clean up plastic waste, one bathroom at a time. We chat with Founder of Baresop Prisca Ongonga-Daehn about how Baresop began.

"We are excited for the Go Vita community to join us in our goal to eliminate one billion single-use plastic bottles from landfill and 50,000 tonnes of CO2 from our atmosphere."

“Several factors came together to coalesce the Baresop proposition and concept in my mind, with the aim of creating personal care products that make it easy to create meaningful change, without compromising your lifestyle and needs. The first factor was living in South-east Asia, where I witnessed first-hand how much single-use plastic was immersed in our everyday lives; the second was having an outspoken daughter, whose main wish in life is to clean up the Pacific Ocean Garbage Patch. Together, as a family, we decided to do our bit to reduce plastic waste. We started by researching just how much single-plastic waste was created by personal care products, and working out how to find a solution that was a fully closed loop, and not ‘greenwashing’. I took the responsibility to create the solution I wanted and aimed to bring the community along with me to create positive change. It was not to be a linear journey, in any shape or form. Undertaking conversations with Australian consumers showed that 90 percent saw the importance of finding an alternative to single-use plastics, provided that it was convenient, easy to use and

provided value. I was also surprised to learn that it is the water content in personal care products which makes it necessary for them to be packaged in single-use plastic, so I decided to find a way to cut out the water content. Despite initially being told by many cosmetic chemists that this was impossible, persistence paid off. The result is Baresop. Baresop products are Australian-made, with plant-derived ingredients and none of the toxic chemicals often found in traditional personal care products. They are palm oil- and cruelty-free, and suitable for vegans. The bottles are made from recycled waste and the sachets are also recyclable. Importantly, our concentrate concept means we cut a huge percentage of carbon emissions from the processes of making, transporting and storing our products. We are excited for the Go Vita community to join us in our goal to eliminate one billion single-use plastic bottles from landfill and 50,000 tonnes of CO2 from our atmosphere. We also aim to conserve 600,000 litres of water by 2035; plus, for each litre saved we make that amount accessible to communities that do not have clean drinking water.”

LIVE WELL

Natural Pain Relief

Muscle, nerve and joint pain can be mild or severe, chronic or just come on suddenly. The good news is that Mother Nature can ease the ache.

Your body is an intricate network of bones, muscles, nerves, ligaments, tendons and cartilage. Pain can result from an acute physical injury, such as a pinched nerve or strained muscle, which in turn may be caused by a variety of triggers, such as whiplash – often from an accident or sports injury – lifting a heavy object or engaging in strenuous activity. Pain can also result from habitually poor posture and chronic and degenerative joint and/or nerve disorders, such as arthritis, rheumatism, sciatica, fibromyalgia or a prolapsed disc. Fractures resulting from osteoporosis also cause severe pain. Stress, pregnancy and certain occupations, such as working on computers, are other predisposing factors. Treatment should focus on resolving the underlying problem, if possible, or, at the very least, bringing short-term relief and organising the long-term management of chronic pain.

A SUCCESS STORY

A roller-skating accident in the 1970s left Geoff Surtees in crippling pain. “Climbing stairs was not an option and even getting out of bed in the morning was painful,” he says. After trying every possible treatment, doctors said that he would have to undergo knee replacement surgery. However, he then discovered Zea’s Kunzea products – and he has not looked back. “I’ve used this cream for years and I still love it!” he says. “I never leave home without a tube of it and I often suggest it to other people. Living without pain – now, that’s a big thing.”
