When the mine's air compressor, essential for powering pneumatic equipment underground, broke down, they contacted Rand Air for an urgent solution that required 12 000cfm (cubic feet per minute) to keep their operation going. Understanding that every hour of downtime incurs significant losses for the mine, the skilled Rand Air team allocated sixteen high-pressure oil-injected diesel compressors of various sizes for the project. After inspection by the service team, the units were transported to the site and connected to the mine's main air supply line by a Rand Air service technician. Remarkably, the units were fully operational within just 24 hours! Considering that the air has to travel a great distance from the surface to reach the underground equipment, it is essential that the compressors are correctly specced to eliminate potential pressure drops and loss in air flow. The Rand Air team subsequently provided a combination of 800cfm, 1 000cfm and 1 200cfm machines to meet these requirements. Four days later, the mine suffered yet another breakdown and requested a further 14 000 cfm of compressed air in order to maintain production. Rand Air once again lived up to its reputation as a reliable rental partner, delivering nine brand new PTS916 1600 cfm air compressors from a recently received consignment to the mine and made them operational within a 24-hour turnaround.
Rand Air leads the emergency hire charge with the supply of 25 air compressors and 26 000 cfm within 4 days.
Assisting a long-standing customer and leading platinum mine in Rustenburg by supplying critical air to keep underground operations going, exemplifies how Rand Air has cornered Southern A ica's emergency hire solutions market.
