10 Term 3 Calendar

Dear Families and Carers,

12 What ’ s on @ The Lakes

Welcome to Term 3. I trust that the break was a chance for our students and families to rest, reset, and return with energy for what is a very full and purposeful Term across the College. Although this is a shorter nine - week Term, it ’ s certainly one of the busiest and most rewarding. Across both campuses, our staff and students are leaning into opportunities for deep learning, personal growth, and meaningful connection— with one another, with the curriculum, and with our broader community.

COLLEGE PRIORITIES AND ATTENDANCE EXPECTATIONS

This Term, we are reinforcing four key expectations that will maximise learning success:

Daily attendance and punctuality

• Bringing all required learning materials, including charged devices

A positive, solution - oriented mindset

A personal commitment to actively drive one ’ s learning

ATTENDANCE Families are reminded that all absences must be explained , as per the Department of Education policy. Our Attendance Officers and leadership team monitor attendance closely, and our Senior School students must meet the 90% attendance minimum . Where students fall below expectations, intervention strategies including catch - up work may be required to support progression.

Parents/Carers MUST provide a reason and evidence supporting any student absence.

The College ’ s Progression Policy outlines the procedure for students that have missed significant periods of time at school and who may require redemption work to be completed, or further classes to attend to demonstrate learning for admittance to the next year level at the completion of the scholastic year.

Our College Attendance Policy Flowchart here outlines the process clearly.

ACADEMIC PROGRESS AND REPORTING Semester One reports have now been distributed for students in Years Prep to 10. VCE reports will be sent home in the first week of this Term, to allow teachers time over the break to mark exams. I encourage parents/carers to review the reports thoughtfully and contact classroom teachers with any questions or concerns—particularly if expected learning growth has not occurred.

PRIMARY CAMPUS It ’ s a pleasure to welcome back Mr Abney Hastings to the Primary Campus after his recent placement as Acting Principal at Wollert Primary School. Mr Abney Hastings returns with renewed energy and great optimism for the term ahead.

Across the Primary Campus, students are engaging in a wide array of learning experiences:

Year 1 – 3 Swimming is underway and will run through to Week 7

Excursions and Incursions are enriching learning from Prep to Year 5 —including the Year 1 Traffic School, Year 2 RSPCA visit, and Year 5 excursions to the NGV and Preston Market

Science Week and Book Week will bring hands - on exploration and joyful celebration of literacy

The Year 3/4 Camp will build independence and resilience

The Prep Readiness Program is gaining strong traction, with over 35 students already enrolled for 2026 —a sign of trust and confidence in our College community

TERM 3 HIGHLIGHTS COLLEGE

100 days of Prep and Year 7, on August 1, we will proudly mark 100 Days of Learning with both our Prep and Year 7 students—one of the rare occasions where a school community celebrates this milestone across both the beginning and middle years. This event acknowledges not just the passing of time, but the growth, collaboration and achievement each student has made since the start of the year. As part of the celebration, students will contribute a personal reflection or artefact to their individual “ vault ” —a collection that will be returned to them at their Year 12 Graduation, symbolising their learning journey at The Lakes. Freaky Friday – The College Production , featuring students from Years 5 – 12, is a true celebration of creativity, teamwork and school pride (August 18 – 19 @ PRACC)

SECONDARY CAMPUS

Secondary students are likewise entering a rich and dynamic Term of learning. A special thank you to Mrs Short for leading the Secondary Campus with care and professionalism throughout Term 2. We welcome Ms Lee back to the Secondary Campus this Term. Staff continue to deepen their professional learning through the Science of Learning framework, refining their instructional practice to ensure every student is equipped to succeed.

Highlights across the Secondary Campus include:

Subject selection and pathways planning for senior students

Year 9 City Experience and Year 10 Work Experience

Science Week and Book Week will bring hands - on exploration and joyful celebration of literacy

Year 8 VIA Peer Coaching , building leadership and connection with Primary high - ability learners

Learner Review Meetings , which are critical to strengthening the three - way partnership of school, family, and student

Interschool Sport , where students represent the College in basketball and table tennis

STAFFING UPDATES

This Term, we welcome several new staff across both campuses:

• Ms Robertson (replacing Ms McKenzie, Family Leave – Primary)

Ms Kempton (Primary)

Mr Serra (Secondary Maths/PE teacher)

Mr De Carteret (Secondary Instrumental Music)

Ms Hannon (Secondary Integration Aide)

We wish all of our new staff a positive start and rewarding experience in their new roles.

We extend our thanks and best wishes to Ms Somerville, who has served our College community as Secondary Youth Worker for the past four years. Her tireless support of our most vulnerable students and her thoughtful guidance have left a lasting legacy.

MOBILE PHONE USE AND ONLINE SAFETY

I take this opportunity to reinforce our Mobile Phone Policy , which aligns with Department of Education expectations. All mobile phones must be switched off and securely stored during the school day unless special exemptions are in place.

The College leadership team will continue to work in partnership with families to promote responsible digital citizenship and safe use of technology. Further details are available on our website.

Furthermore, I draw your attention to important upcoming changes in legislation:

At The Lakes South Morang College inappropriate use of mobile phones is any use during school hours , unless an exception has been granted, and particularly use of a mobile phone:

It will soon be illegal for children under 16 to hold social media accounts

Principals will hold greater discretion to suspend or expel students whose online behaviour significantly compromises the safety of others

in any way that disrupts the learning of others

to send inappropriate, harassing or threatening messages or phone calls

Parents and carers may be held liable for failing to supervise and support safe online practices

to engage in inappropriate social media use including cyber bullying

When can schools take a phone?

to capture video or images of people, including students, teachers and members of the school community without their permission

Violation of school policies: If a student uses a phone in a way that contradicts the school's rules, such as using it during class without permission, the school may confiscate the device. Disruption or misuse: If a student's phone use disrupts the learning environment or is misused (e.g., filming without consent), the school can take action. Serious misuse: In cases of serious misuse, like filming illegal activities, the school may involve the police and the phone may be confiscated for longer periods.

to capture video or images in the school toilets, changing rooms, swimming pools and gyms

during exams and assessments

Summary

Students who bring mobile phones to school must have them switched off and securely stored during school hours. Exceptions to the policy may be applied if certain conditions are met. Exceptions can be granted by the principal, or by a teacher. Exceptions must be documented.

Schools must provide secure storage.

IN CLOSING With so much happening across both campuses, Term 3 is a reminder of the richness of learning that exists beyond textbooks and classrooms. I am proud of the many opportunities our students have to grow—in knowledge, character, and confidence.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support, trust, and collaboration. I look forward to seeing many of you at drop - off, at upcoming events, and at our Learner Review Meetings throughout the term.

Warm regards,

Mr Bill Panas College Principal

SOLVING WATER PROBLEMS IN THE WORLD YEAR 7 HUMANITIES EXCURSION TO WHITTLESEA TECH. SCHOOL

ANITEJ, ANGAD & CHARLEE – YEAR 7

On Tuesday, 17 th June, Year 7 students had the opportunity to take part in a workshop at Whittlesea Tech in Epping. The excursion was part of our Humanities unit ‘ Water in the World ’ where the focus was on learning different ways we can help save water in our communities. The experience opened our eyes to how small innovations and creative thinking can make a big difference especially when it comes to an issue as critical as water pollution and scarcity. When we arrived at Whittlesea Tech, we quickly put our bags in a locker and made our way to the auditorium. The Whittlesea Tech staff then told us what we were doing and where we would do it. We would be using what we had learnt in Humanities to solve an existing problem related to water pollution. We were split into 3 groups and moved to different spaces.

Each group were introduced to the design process. There were 5 stages: Empathise, Define, Ideate, Prototype, Test.

We started with empathise , where we thought very broadly about the issue of water pollution. We listed different types of pollution and different types of effects and consequences of those pollutions.

We then moved on to define , where we narrowed it down to one type of pollution and one consequence to focus on and create a solution for. We wrote a sentence that outlined our issue and consequence.

Ideate was the next step. In this step, we brainstormed solutions for the issue. We then ‘ cross - pollinated' our ideas with the other classes by going to a different room and writing our ideas on a sticky note and putting them on the other people ’ s paper. We then used those ideas to choose one to prototype . This is where we chose one idea to build a solution for. We drafted our ideas on a blank paper, creating story boards and blueprints for our ideas. We then created that idea out of card paper and different craft items.

Once we were done, we tested our creations in a marketplace walk. This is where we all walked around looking at each other ’ s pieces and asking questions to the one group member that stayed back.

My chosen topic was agricultural runoff, which is when excess water from farms carries chemicals and waste into rivers and other water sources. I wanted to find a way to address this challenge while also supporting organic and sustainable farming. My solution was to design a mobile app that helps farmers track and manage their water usage in eco - friendly ways. Using Canva, I created a design for the app interface. The app includes features such as alerts for rainfall, advice on natural fertilizers, and tips for minimising runoff. The goal is to encourage farmers to use water organically and more efficiently without harming the environment. Reflecting on the day, I felt proud of what I was able to create and inspired by the ideas shared by others. Learning about water - saving techniques and having the chance to present a tech - based solution really helped me see how innovation and environmental care can go together. - Anitej

The staff from Whittlesea Tech were impressed with our designs and it was great to see the ideas other groups had. The trip to Whittlesea Tech was one of the best we ’ ve had this year. We learnt a lot about pollution and how important it is to protect our water and it was really fun applying what we have learnt at school to a real - life situation and process.
