At its formal meeting on 23 October, the Board of the Victoria Racing Club resolved that the black-type 1400 metre contest on Stakes Day 2020 should be named “The Amanda Elliott” to honour the Chairman of the Victoria Racing Club on the eve of her retirement from the Board after 18½ unbroken years of honorary service to the Club. +YVXLIVMX[EWEKVIIHXLEXƸ8LI&QERHE*PPMSXXƹ[MPPǻRHEGSRXMRYMRK place in the VRC’s future annual racing program. This is a special honour, appropriately so for a woman who has been a trailblazer for the Club. Apart from a few exceptions in the decades before the First World War, women were not eligible even to be elected as members of the Victoria Racing Club until the early 1980s, let alone serve on the Committee. Sally Chirnside was XLIǻVWX[SQERIZIVIPIGXIHXSXLI:7((SQQMXXIIEWMXXLIR[EW in 1991. Amanda Elliott became the second, in 2002. Four years later the Committee was reconstituted as a Board. Her family has a proud tradition of service to the community. Her great-grandfather William Bayles was a colonial Mayor of Melbourne, her grandfather Norman Bayles a trustee of the Melbourne Cricket Ground and pioneer of lawn tennis in Australia, her father Ian Bayles a Second World War decorated air hero who
