lending and real estate companies. A lot of brand building and channel marketing comes into play when you are making people aware of investment opportunities. Investors have to be open with their viewpoints a little bit to new ways of investing some of their capital. “There’s a huge community effect when investors come together. Becoming a source of information for people rather than just promoting a product or investment opportunity is so important. You’re not going to differentiate yourself if all you’re talking about is what you’re offering instead of the value that being involved with you offers.” PROUDEST MOMENT: “I’m definitely so proud of Patch of Land. When I started, there were the three founders, and then I joined. Now it is one of the top, most-well-known real estate crowdfunding companies. I am so proud of everything I did with that com- pany: building it with the founders from three people into a company of 40 people, raising capital, building the networks that we did and really being a leader.” A WORD FOR WOMEN IN REAL ESTATE: “Women bring so much value to real estate investing, and it’s not just a soft-skill set. It’s the way that we interact, the way we look at the world and see opportunities. As more women come into real estate and the finance side of it, they’re able to connect a lot of data and hard metrics with an almost intuitive understand- ing of trends and how those trends affect a business. “There have always been a lot of women in marketing be- cause it’s such a creative space. If you’re going to differentiate yourself from the competition in any sector, understanding how people relate to each other and, by extension, how they will relate to your brand, is key.” •
free resources and education to both beginning and experienced real estate investors, along with opportunities to invest in turn- key rental properties in real estate markets nationwide. Fettke herself has been active in real estate for more than 10 years, starting out as a mortgage broker in 2004 and becoming a Realtor for Keller Williams before merging her skills in radio and real estate to eventually create “The Real Wealth Show” and its associated network. “A lot of people feel that they do not have the time to invest in real estate,” she ex- plained, noting that RWN provides education for those who want to do it themselves and offers turnkey opportunities for those who want to invest but do not have the time. WHAT’S AHEAD IN 2017: Fettke described several opportunities in which her inves- tors may participate in 2017. “One of the biggest things for us in 2017 is our buy-and-hold rental fund. We’ve specialized in offering turnkey rental properties, but a lot of our investors really want to own real estate but just don’t have the time even for turnkey. We’ve had a tremendous number of people asking us to just do it completely for them. “We’ve also got a bunch of deals going on in Reno, where we’re buying and syndicating apartments because the town there is booming. We’ll be doing a lot of building because there is such a shortage of housing in the area and that has become a specialty of ours.” CRUCIAL “KEY” TO SUCCESS IN THE INDUSTRY: “The only way to survive in this business is to know how to do your due diligence [on everyone] or hire someone highly expe- rienced to do it for you. Only partner with the best: those with years of experience and a track record of success to show for it. “Investing is literally as safe as swimming with sharks. I have found more often than not that people are out for your money and not your well-being.” PROUDEST MOMENT: “The thing that gives me the most joyful gratitude is that almost daily we get a testimonial from someone who is feeling hopeful now because they have a plan for their future and that plan is working. They can see that in 10 or 12 years they can be job-optional, and for many it happens almost overnight because we are able to take some nonperforming assets and just rearrange them a little and, suddenly, they’re performing beautifully and life changes.” A WORD FOR WOMEN IN REAL ESTATE: “I come from a time when literally I was told not to work, and even today women receive a lot of criticism or judgment for working and choosing to work. In my lifetime, I’ve seen the shift from feeling powerless to feeling very powerful and
