Be bear aware say police OPP and conservation officers responded to a report of a black bear cub spotted near a residential lot in South Stormont early in the morning on May 27. Police incident report states the cub seemed to be roaming about and not posing a threat. OPP notified area residents, neighbourhood schools and bus companies that the bear cub was in the area to increase its chance of leaving the vicinity without any incident. OPP remind all homeowners in the Five Counties region to take steps to “bear proof” their property and reduce the chance of any unwanted wildlife from coming into a yard in search of food. That includes waiting until the morning of garbage collection to put bagged trash out for collection. Check the Ministry of Natural Resources website for advice on bearproofing property in rural areas. For emergency situations involving a bear in the area phone 911. North Dundas mourns the loss of ex-mayor
Township of North Dundas Mayor Eric Duncan expressed his sadness at the passing of former North Dundas Mayor Claude Cousineau. Cousineau served two terms as the first mayor of the amalgamated Township of North Dundas, from 1998 to 2003. Prior to that, he served as Reeve, Deputy Reeve and Councillor in the former Winchester Township. Cousineau also served as Warden of the United Counties of SD&G in 1990. He was named the 2013 recipient of the North Dundas Community Builder Award which recognized him as a long-time leader in municipal government, the North Dundas Fire Service, and Morewood Recreation, among others causes. “Claude was the true definition of someone who told it like it is,” said Duncan. “He didn’t just talk about what needed to be done, he led the charge and led by example. His decades of service in public life demonstrate the North Dundas residents’ respect for that type of strong leadership.” – Francis Racine
