2025 Official OKC Visitors Guide

ONION BURGERS During the Great Depression, Oklahoma-style onion burgers were invented in nearby El Reno, as grill cooks began smashing thin beef patties with a boatload of slivered onions to help stretch their products and reduce costs. A century later, onion burgers are still a source of Okie pride. Sun Cattle Co.: Onion-fried hamburgers are the star of the show at this relative newcomer on Film Row, where vintage-inspired decor conjures an air of Wild West lore and the thin ’n’ crispy patties are seared to perfection. Tucker’s Onion Burgers: A burgeoning local mini- chain, onion burgers get the fast-casual treatment at these sunny shops, featuring caramelized onions, crispy edges and beef supplied by local farms. Nic’s Grill: This frills-free, cash-only fixture is easy to spot — just follow the wafting aroma of caramelized onions and the inevitable line. The queue is worth the wait for these fan- favorite burgers, heaped with onions on thicker- than-average patties and fluffy buns. Bunny’s: As retro as it is hot-pink, this kitschy diner-style joint continues the legacy of the former Joe’s Onion Burgers that stood in its place in the late ‘70s. Nowadays, the vibe is still classic, and the burgers still come smashed with fried onions and specialty toppings like chili, ranch and barbecue sauce. Burger Punk: For an irreverent option, Burger Punk is the kind of place that tops burgers with truffle mayo, hoisin and Nacho Doritos. It’s also known for its rotating specials, as well as originals like the French Dip Burger, with Swiss, caramelized onions, mayo and au jus.

BISCUITS Indicative of OKC’s geographic location at the nexus of the South, the Southwest and the Midwest, biscuits are a true-blue Southern comfort food found on many a menu around town, from decadent breakfast sandwiches to buttery side dishes. Hunny Bunny Biscuit Co.: Biscuits are the star of the show at Hunny Bunny Biscuit Co., an adorable — and wildly popular — counter- service cafe known for its piled-high biscuit sandwiches, like the Charleston, with fried chicken collard greens, hot sauce and an egg. The Jones Assembly: Scratch-made biscuits are a frequent fixture at The Jones Assembly. At dinner, they’re an apt appetizer, served with honey butter, or alongside Nashville hot chicken, while brunch finds them served with seasonal house jam, or accompanied by hash. Aurora: Biscuits are the bread and butter at Aurora, a warm and inviting breakfast and brunch favorite in the Plaza District. Try them with classic gravy, maple sausage, white bean

hummus or sarsaparilla-braised pork. Toast & Coffee: Don’t let the name fool

you — the jalapeño cheddar biscuits are just as good as the toast and coffee at Toast & Coffee. Fresh outta the oven, these golden- brown beauties boast ooey-gooey cheese that’s nicely balanced by the peppery bite. The Red Cup: For a fresh take on biscuits, go meat-free at The Red Cup, an eclectic vegetarian haunt that puts its own stamp on classic comfort foods, like biscuits and gravy made with gluten-free biscuits, herb gravy, scrambled tofu and poblano.
