the place of man in the time of judg ment. This, Christ has done; He has made peace with God for us. But there is no peace at all, unless the peace has been settled for you by your believing that your sins were nailed to Calvary’s cross. Christ is our peace. Some years ago, during one of the wars between Britain and France, an English frigate spotted a French war ship on the high seas and gave chase to the vessel. It was a furious race between the two, until finally, the French Captain, realizing he could not go farther, hoisted the flag and the British Captain boarded the ves sel. In the custom of military honor, the French officer took off his sword and handed it to the Britisher, sig nifying thereby that he acknowledged defeat. He could run no longer. The English Captain laughed as he said, “Haven’t you heard the news? Don’t you know what’s happened?” The stunned Frenchman responded, “We haven’t had news for three months. We’ve not seen port for over 12 weeks.” Kindly, his sword was hand ed back with the words: “That’s why we tried to overtake you, to tell you that the war is over. Peace has al ready been settled at headquarters.” That evening, both ships rang with joyous celebration. They were no longer enemies, but at peace. Some men and women run through life afraid of their very shadows, afraid of what tomorrow m igh t bring, what illnesses and tragedies lurk ahead. They have not heard the glorious news that peace had been made at headquarters. That peace was purchased for us not with silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, without spot and without blemish. He is the Prince of Peace. Have you experienced true peace with God as well as the blessed peace of God ? If not, you can have it by faith at this moment, right where you are, by accepting God’s free gift of sal vation, His Son, Jesus Christ.
KEEPERS OF THE INN “ I was the keeper of the inn in Bethlehem. Well I remember how one couple knocked; I told them that there was no room for them Because the inn was full; the door was locked. "I did not know that Christ, the Lord of all, Soon to be bom on earth to bear our sin, Was banished to a humble manger stall By words from me . . . the keeper of the inn.” We are keepers of the inn this Christmas eve; How patiently the Christ still stands to knock. We have so many guests, how it must grieve His heart that we so long should seem to mock. His life on earth began that Christ mas tide; Eternal life for us may now begin If we admit the one who waits out side, For you and I are keepers of the inn. THE PROOF Some tell us that prayer is all in the mind, That the only result is the solace we find; That God does not answer, nor hear when we call; We commune with our own heart in prayer, that is all. But we who have knelt with our bur den and care And made all our problems a matter of prayer. Have seen God reach down from His heaven above, Move mountains, touch hearts, in His infinite love. We know that God works in a won derful way On behalf of His children who trust Him and pray. 19
