CONCRETE SOCIETY AWARDS
NORTHERN IRELAND REGION AWARDS 2024
JOINT WINNER: TAYLOR & BOYD LLP THE PAPER EXCHANGE, BELFAST Committed to technical excellence, H&S and sustainability
Taylor & Boyd LLP was named joint winner in the Project of the Year category for its work on The Paper Exchange, an 11-storey, Grade A office building constructed in Belfast City Centre. Solutions used in the project included an in- situ reinforced concrete flat slab, with stability provided by reinforced concrete shear walls forming a central core of lifts and stairs. Foundations include CFA concrete piles supporting reinforced concrete pile caps and ground beams, while watertight concrete was used for below-ground lift pits and the attenuation tank. Among challenges of the project was proximity to adjacent buildings, including live high-voltage electrical cables and an existing substation remaining live throughout the works. ‘On-the-hoof’ creative designs were undertaken by Taylor & Boyd LLP after uncovering existing piles. A high-quality submission demonstrated the impressive work going into the building, including a commitment to technical excellence, health and safety and sustainability, which has been further evidenced by a BREEAM Excellent Rating.
Taylor & Boyd was a joint winner in the Project of the Year category for its work on The Paper Exchange.

JOINT WINNER: DORAN CONSULTING NEWHURST ENERGY RECOVERY FACILITY, SHEPSHED
Doran Consulting optimises design and efficiency
High-quality design and advanced concrete construction technologies deployed by Doran Consulting at Newhurst Energy Recovery Facility impressed judges. One of two submissions sharing overall winner for 2024, the facility is built on a former quarry near Shepshed, Leicestershire and converts an annual 350,000 tonnes of non-recyclable waste, producing enough green energy to serve over 80,000 homes. Early partnership between designers and contractors, and detailed coordination of the project in a collaborative 3D environment, enhanced project efficiency. Notable features included integration of the curved roof, facetted façade and other elements of the facility with the primary boiler and bunker structure to provide overall stability and maximise efficiency. Advanced concrete construction technologies included slip forming for the waste bunker walls, optimising the programme by enabling 24-hour construction. Overall, this project was deemed a very impressive submission, which highlights high-quality design and construction of concrete structures in a safe and efficient working environment.
