HIGHLY COMMENDED: MACRETE IRELAND LIMITED SMALL DEAN VIADUCT, WENDOVER Macrete project achieves a high-class finish
A bespoke design, sustainable concrete mix and high- quality finish are among elements of the Small Dean Viaduct project netting a highly commended award for Macrete Ireland Limited. Stretching 500m across a valley near Wendover in Buckinghamshire, the Small Dean Viaduct forms part of the HS2 high-speed rail line. Macrete’s entry focuses on precast concrete components of the viaduct including the piers, which serve as structural foundations, as well as hammerhead units connecting the piers to the bridge deck. Judges commended the bespoke design and construction of a complex steel mould created by a team of structural engineers, specialist designers and steel fabrication experts. Macrete used a concrete mix with 66% GGBS, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability. The mix was also designed to provide very high workability, allowing the concrete to be placed by pump in one pour, avoiding pour lines. Other notable features of the project included compaction with specially-designed pneumatic vibrators to suit the bespoke moulds and achieve a high-class finish.
Macrete secured a highly commended project award for the Small Dean Viaduct.

JOINT WINNER: PROCESS INNOVATION NORTHSTONE MATERIALS Northstone impresses with its bespoke carbon calculator
An innovative process allowing designers, contractors and clients to accurately and efficiently assess the carbon footprint of ready-mix concrete designs has garnered a joint win in Process Innovation for Northstone Materials. Judges were impressed by a process which is project specific rather than a generic assessment, while also user friendly, presenting its findings in a concise and understandable manner. The tool generates bespoke customer carbon footprint reports detailing carbon emissions associated with the A1-A3 cradle- to-gate and A4 transport-to-site lifecycle stages of ready-mix concrete products. It can be used at design or tender stage, during construction or at project end to give customers a detailed insight into the embodied carbon of their chosen mix designs. Crucially, the report also demonstrates the carbon savings made by choosing to use more sustainable solutions. The process innovation allows customers to confidently compare alternative products, actively seek lower-carbon alternatives and educates them on the benefits of using recycled and secondary materials.
Northstone Materials was awarded a joint win in Process Innovation for its bespoke carbon calculation tool.
