This innovative approach ensured the area remained fully watertight. “For the Dri-Design system on the training centre, we researched and selected a supporting envelope system designed to meet several critical criteria: flexibility to adapt to temperature changes, compliance with building standards and robustness to withstand anticipated wind loads throughout its lifecycle.” Providing innovative solutions for such challenges and seeing the NIFRS project completed as a state-of-the-art, modern training facility was, however, an incredibly rewarding experience for Thornton. “A standout feature is the multi-coloured panels on the Dri-Design façade at the training centre entrance, which create a striking, contemporary aesthetic and reflect a fresh design approach,” said Gareth.

“Our collaboration with Felix O’Hare was exceptional. From programme agreements to resolving design issues, the contractor consistently demonstrated a practical and proactive approach. Monolithic Hot-Melt inverted cold roof system across the training centre and warehouse of the NI Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) complex. Additionally, it was tasked with providing a Kingspan AWP Micro Rib composite cladding system for the outer skin of the training warehouse, and a Kingspan Dri-Design rainscreen façade to the main entrance of the training centre. Several challenges were encountered throughout the design and installation process, including one area which required accommodating multiple steel penetrations through the Kingspan cladding, metal drip and felt upstand. Gareth Simpson, Contract Manager, said, “Our in-house design team collaborated closely with the client’s architect, as well as Kingspan and Alumasc, to develop a
