ROOFLIGHTS

Roofglaze provided rooflights on a supply-only basis to main contractor Felix O’Hare, with the smooth-running project highlighting the importance of correct detailing and specification. Mark Pardoe, Head of Sales, said, “Our products were fully specified and expertly detailed by the architect. As experts in rooflight specifications, we were

Commissioned directly by main contractor Felix O’Hare to provide architectural services at RIBA stages 4-6, RPP Architects worked on the main teaching and administrative facility, and training warehouse, mock fire station and call-out village buildings. The Belfast-based business was also tasked with co- ordination alongside other consultants including on the Building Information Models (BIM) via clash- detection workshops.

able to talk the contractor through all the specific details and, with the contractor clearly being an expert in what they do too, they understood the requirements fully. “The glazing utilised in the rooflights is classified as Class 1 non-fragile, which means the glass is safe to be walked on for short periods for maintenance purposes and is also designed to offer protection from falling through it should someone fall on the rooflights and break the glass. This ensures safety for maintenance operatives working on the roof. “A diffused finish is also applied to the glass to diffuse the light coming into the building which reduces the scattering of light and homogenises the light source. “We would be more than happy to work with the contractor on other projects, whether specified by an architect or if the project has an open specification requirement.”

Challenges included understanding the training aspects of the buildings, and any impact on the various building control approvals. RPP attended meetings with the end-users facilitated by Felix O’Hare, and closely liaised with local building control officers, to achieve a successful result. It used NBS Chorus to produce the architectural works specification, and BIM Collab for clash- detection resolution. Philip Murray, Associate, said, “The Contractor team was very experienced and proactive, and our working relationship was excellent. Working on the country’s centralised fire services training site and knowing that the new facilities will help improve the training of future fire fighters was very rewarding.”
