A NOTE FROM SYLVIA Autumn colors mark fall in Minnesota, and I find myself enjoying cool hikes along the Mississippi River and a few more evenings at home enjoying my favorite TPT shows. This month, I am looking forward to two brand new local arts and culture programs. TPT’s new season of STAGE gives you a front row seat and a backstage pass to performances by some of your favorite local musicians, who also introduce you to artists they want you to know. Recorded live at First Avenue’s legendary 7th St Entry, every episode includes stellar performances, personal insights from the musicians, and never-before- seen collaborations. STAGE premieres new episodes on Fridays from October 13 through November 17 at 8 p.m. on TPT 2. Art + Medicine: Disability, Culture and Creativity is a remarkable documentary produced in collaboration with the Center for the Art of Medicine at the University of Minnesota Medical School. This film aims to destigmatize disabilities through the power of storytelling, art, and performances. The premiere is October 29 at 6 p.m. on TPT 2. I am also thrilled to announce TPT's launch of NEXTGEN TV, which will allow TPT to deliver a more personalized and dynamic viewing experience that resonates with the modern needs of our audience. A one-hour documentary, Art + Medicine: Disability, Culture and Creativity exists at the crossroads of art, medicine, and the experiences of individuals with disabilities. The film aims to destigmatize disabilities through the power of storytelling, art, and performances. Mark your calendars for the premiere on October 29 at 6 p.m. on TPT 2. Hosted by Jessica Horvath Williams, Ph.D., storyteller and artist Kevin Kling, and Internal Medicine Doctor Tseganesh Selameab, the documentary showcases artists and healthcare clinicians collaborating to forge alternative viewpoints on disability through personal narratives and impactful performances. What is TPT Passport? TPT Passport is a benefit for members who give $60 or more annually: one that requires a username and password (which you can create by going to tpt.org/sign-in and setting up an account) that you use to log in to tpt.org or the PBS App to watch additional episodes of your favorite TPT shows. Whether you’re on the site or in the app, you’ll notice a small compass symbol in the corner of the show image. That’s your invitation to watch a show that’s only available to members. How can I access shows within Passport on my SmartTV? By using the PBS App! Download the app from the app store, and use your TPT Passport credentials to log in and gain access to extended programming. Why do I need to log in for some shows and not for others? A lot of shows are available for all to stream online. Episodes marked as “Passport” are shows you’ll need to log-in to watch, whether that’s online or on the app.

Five Travel Lessons from a Newly Open Europe By Rick Steves
2) Second Cities Are Better Than Ever
I’ve long appreciated Europe’s smaller “second cities,” and in today’s travel reality, these edgy and creative cities—filled with wonderful food, history, and culture, but no crowds—are a better choice than ever. Everybody goes to Paris, so why not try out Marseille? Glasgow is just an hour from Edinburgh on the train, and Porto is three hours north of Lisbon. Go to the less-famous places and treat them like the famous places.
3) Europe Made Some Changes While You Were Gone...

Europe didn’t waste any time during the shutdowns. Hotels and restaurants got spiffed up, smart innovations now allow travelers to efficiently make reservations, and there are lots of exciting new museums, libraries, and restaurants—making it more important than ever to equip yourself with a good guidebook.
Europe was wide open to travelers this summer and busier than ever. And like a lot of travelers, I’m eager to make up for lost time and scuttled travel dreams— and this summer, my travels took me from Iceland to Istanbul, with lots of exciting stops in between. I’ll be sharing my favorite photos, stories, and lessons learned at the Fitzgerald Theater on November 26 (tpt.org/rick2023), and I hope I’ll see you there. In the meantime, here are five observations from my recent travels:
4) ...But Your Pre-Pandemic Favorites Survived
Before I returned to Europe, I was really worried about all my favorite little mom-and-pop places. But I happily found most of them still standing— and thriving—thanks to government help and the support of locals who love these characteristic spots as much as I do.
1) To Beat the Crowds, Don’t Follow the Crowds
Europe is busier than ever—especially at marquee sites—but there are lots of worthwhile alternatives not far from the tourist stampede. If the Anne Frank House is sold out, drop by the wonderful Dutch Resistance Museum instead. The Uffizi Gallery is packed? Try the Duomo Museum. And while I used to define “shoulder season” as May and September, to avoid spillover summer crowds (and rising summer heat), my new recommendation is to travel in April and October.
5) The World is Filled with Beautiful People—Just as It Always Has Been
Travel is all about people—and that will never change. The ambiance of Europe, the paseo, the energy on the streets, and the café scene are all just as they were before. The love of life is vibrant in Europe, and being there still makes your endorphins do little flip-flops. Now more than ever, it’s important to get out there. When we travel, we learn there's more than one right way to do things, and that the best souvenir is a broader perspective.

Twin Cities PBS Upgrading to NEXTGEN TV Antenna Viewers Will Need to Rescan October 25
Does this mean I will no longer be able to watch live over-the-air TV?
Twin Cities PBS (TPT) is committed to better serving our viewers. For this reason, TPT will be upgrading our transmission signal to NEXTGEN TV on October 25. Viewers who use an antenna to receive our signal will need to rescan to continue to access TPT channels. We answer a few frequently asked questions here. You can read more about NEXTGEN TV at tpt.org/ tech-updates .
No, you can still watch all TPT channels with an antenna. TPT is committed to serving all our viewers and will continue providing our current broadcast to all viewers even if your TV is not equipped with NEXTGEN TV-enabled technology. Viewers without NEXTGEN TV-enabled TVs will not have access to interactive features we may employ in the future.
What is NEXTGEN TV?
Do viewers with older sets need to do anything?
NEXTGEN TV is the next evolution of broadcast technology. NEXTGEN TV improves efficiency of broadcast and will provide a stronger signal to those at the edges of our coverage area. In the future, the technology will allow TPT to provide more personalized viewing experiences to viewers with smart TVs.
Cable and satellite viewers don’t need to take any action. Antenna viewers with older sets should rescan their TVs because some of the TV signals have been relocated as part of the upgrade. Rescan instructions can be found at fcc.gov/rescan .
Can my existing TV receive NEXTGEN TV?
TVs with NEXTGEN TV-enabled technology will be able to take advantage of the new technology. Some companies are also developing “set top boxes” to allow NEXTGEN TV to be used on older TV sets through a simple connection. Explore compatible devices at watchnextgentv.com .

Welcome to Joni Mitchell Mania. The Bard of Canada is back.
After years of staying out of the public eye, Joni seems to be everywhere. To the delight of her fans, she made a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival in 2022. A live album of her set is said to be in the works. On March 31, 2023, she was featured on PBS celebrating her honor as a recipient of The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song and in June, she headlined the "Joni Jam" at the Gorge Amphitheater in Washington State, which also featured Grammy winner Brandi Carlile, 42. Joni Mitchell will turn 79 in November.
As Joni might sum up the past decade of her life: You don't know what you've got till it's gone. In March 2015, she suffered a brain aneurysm rupture. She had to have extensive physical therapy as she learned to walk and talk again. She made only a handful of public appearances as she recuperated. Call Joni's lyrics lessons in poetry or songwriting or prose. All of those descriptions fit. The point is that women of all ages have found common ground in Joni's music for more than 50 years: the pain and betrayal that accompanies a bitter breakup ("Coyote"), the world-weary understanding, always, that life goes on ("The Circle Game"), the appreciation of self-reliance ("Free Man in Paris"). And so much more.

In today's tenuous world, everywhere we turn in our country, a fire, flood, landslide or other disaster is leaving families homeless. Youth are avoiding higher education because of the cost. Disease is breaking apart families. Houses of worship are facing financial straits. Needs seem endless. Making contributions everywhere is impossible, but did you know that with a planned giving strategy you can donate beyond your lifetime to causes that matter most to you? People who want to give to charity but fear running out of money have options. If you are resisting giving now because you worry about needing cash, planned giving is a way to act on your interests. Planned giving can fulfill your wishes after your death while potentially receiving benefits during your lifetime — and you can still leave money to family or friends.
What if you do not feel you have the cash to donate, even post-death? You are not alone — 93% of American wealth is held in non-cash assets. These types of assets include retirement investments, real estate, life insurance and privately held stock.
"Planned giving should be a thoughtful process that allows someone to ponder their philanthropic passions, while considering the needs of loved ones."
“Cash is not king" when it comes to supporting worthy causes. Stocks, mutual funds, real estate and retirement assets are also commonly accepted donations. Other more complex assets like life insurance and closely held business interests can be donated as well, even post-life. With a broad range of your assets available to donate to charity, review what your expected financial needs are today and until the anticipated end of life. What income do you need annually? Are you preparing to sell a privately held business and would benefit from a tax deduction and avoidance of capital gains? Do you have a highly appreciated stock?
