ANZAC DAY STAKES The Australian Government formally proclaimed ANZAC Day as a national holiday in 1921, six years after Gallipoli, as a day devoted to the memory of Australians and New Zealanders who served our countries in war, and to commemorate those who gave their lives. From 1959 the Victoria Racing Club has marked ANZAC Day with a commemorative race meeting at Flemington.
