DRAMA

Glengarry Glen Ross

with a sophisticated physical language of storytelling. Managing to convey the streets of New York, the United Nations and, of course, the famous crop-duster sequence with fluid and slick use of rhythm and choreography accompanied by Bernard Hermann’s driving underscore, Howard left us on the edge of our seats. There was a memorable central performance from Cameron Forbes as the persecuted Thornhill, who steps into a nightmare in a role made famous by Cary Grant. Drake House brought the diverse programme to a close with an extract from John Godber’s Bouncers . Stereotypes abound in this four-man play centred on the world of clubbing. The cast took turns to play the role of four bouncers, four girls on a night out, and the four guys trying to take them home despite the 14 pints they’ve consumed. Freddie Maher steered the multi-rolling and ensured that the evening ended with plenty of laughs. Clearly the spirit of creativity is alive and well at Dulwich; the ambition, scale and scope of this evening of Upper School House Drama was laudable and deciding on a final order or achievement was a considerable task. We are grateful to our adjudicator, Simon Dormandy, (former Director of Drama at Eton and currently directing for the higher education department at the Globe) who commended the boys for their invention and commitment, and for creating some truly memorable stage pictures, rich characterisation and for thrilling ensemble-playing.
