W hen I first heard about the New Views project, I had no idea what it was about, but it didn’t take long for me to warm to the idea of writing my own play on whatever subject I wanted (within reason). The Friday lunchtime classes really helped me with the structure of my script and gave me ways to convey my ideas throughout the piece. Our group was lucky enough to see The Red Barn by David Hare, which was brilliant and gave us a few ideas about how to build up tension in an extremely thrilling way. It also

answered any questions we had about prop placement on stage. From there we learnt about Chekhov’s gun theory and how props shouldn’t make false promises to the audience by never being used. The Red Barn was one of the first plays I watched for its stagecraft and cleverness throughout, as opposed to purely for enjoyment. The original inspiration for my play came from Vini Bolzano, the little boy who snitched on his father in Arthur Miller’s A View From The Bridge .

B oys also enjoyed a terrific workshop with playwright Matt Hartley. Hartley won the inaugural Bruntwood Award for his play Sixty Five Miles , produced by Paines Plough and Hull Truck. ‘I found the workshop to be a delightful marriage of both fun and constructive discussion. It was incredibly helpful to receive advice on the topic of writing plays while being able to share and develop my ideas within a responsive and interested group. I really enjoyed the experience, and am now much more knowledgeable

about useful areas of a playwright’s craft, such as developing a character, effectively displaying a scene and also how to develop the wider plot of a play in a more sophisticated manner. Overall, I feel that the workshop has imbued me with confidence in abilities I never knew I had and a fascination with storytelling.’
