MUSIC

Dulwich scene, such is the desire for places within pre-existing setups. Yet there is never a more heart-warming indicator of the singing tradition here at the College than on the evening of House Music, when every year more boys than ever before participate in one of the few occasions where the whole school can truly come together. The variety and high standard of all four competitions within the ‘House Music’ bracket is testament to the diversity and dedication of the department. And finally, no account of singing at Dulwich this year would be complete without some mention of the Upper School production Grease . Yet the reason this is so relevant to the point of this article is not the general excellence of the performance, although this cannot be understated. I will readily admit now that upon reading the cast list back in September, many of the names present made me think ‘he’s not a singer, he’ll never be able to do this, they’ve got it all wrong’. Much to my delight, I was proven wrong by every single cast member. Whether it is within one of the College’s fantastic choirs, or shouting Pueri Alleynienses on the sidelines of the rugby field (the irony of using a Latin song to intimidate the opposition continues to amuse me), singing can indeed, as the old cliché goes, be for everyone, just as it was in the Great Hall that December morning. The loss of some brilliant College musicians in recent years has not proved detrimental; instead they merely inspire and pass on the baton to the next budding wave of enthusiasts. And, very briefly, a thank you to Mette Turner, who leaves Dulwich this summer following years of dedicated service to the Music Department. She will be sorely missed and we wish her a happy and well-earned retirement.
