HOCKEY Ethan Smith (Year 13)

C oming back from a successful tour to Singapore and Malaysia over the summer, the senior Hockey season began with a match against Alleyn’s in early December. With a strong start from Dulwich and a commanding 3-0 lead, despite a late 3-2 attempt from Alleyn’s, this game got the season started in the way we wanted. We then had our inaugural mixed hockey match, also against our strong rivals Alleyn’s, where seven Dulwich boys were joined by a fierce JAGS team. Despite gaining the lead late on, we were unable to secure a victory. After Christmas, we unfortunately made a slow start back into the hockey fixtures with disappointing defeats against Eltham College and Alleyn’s. The annual St George’s Sixes offered the chance to turn the season around, despite mock examinations preventing many Year 13 players from participating. This did not stop a strong team of Tom Panzetta, Louis Ferrari, Ben Wald, Jake Scarisbrick, Luke Castenskiold, Femi Sofolarin and Lucas Wilson from making great progress through the plate competition. This successful tournament sparked renewed confidence in the team and we dispatched a weak Caterham side five goals to one. The following week, perhaps the closest game of the season, came against Trinity who narrowly scraped out a draw against us within the closing minutes of the match. The toughest game of the season, supposedly, came against St George’s. Although Dulwich were the clear underdogs, it did not stop us outplaying their strong hockey side to a 3-2 victory. After this we continued our strong form to an easy 2-0 victory against St Albans. The final match of the season was against KCS, another tough match ending in a draw. Most of the star performers of the season were included in our sturdy defence: Hector Pearce, Tom Panzetta, Jasper Goodsell, Oscar Draycott and our top goalscorer, Louis Ferrari. Overall, despite a limited number of fixtures due to freezing temperatures, it was undoubtedly a good season for senior Hockey, with the 2nds only losing one of their matches. I am sure the strengthening form of Dulwich Hockey will continue to grow over the coming years.
