CURRICULUM

W e stopped learning about rivers in Geography as they were considered too mainstream, allowing us to coast through the year. Any subject where the first lesson back is an hour of colouring-in must be considered the best in the school. Like any good geographer, I carry around with me at all times the Staedtler 157 SB24 Ergosoft Triangular Colouring Pencil, in order to achieve that perfect colour differentiation when tackling a choropleth map. Though often denigrated by the department upstairs, we GEOGRAPHY The Applied Science Of Colouring In Robert Power

geographers are both resilient and understanding: studying a subject that never changes means that the historians need to find something to do with their time. And change is exactly what Geography does: it translates from Greek as ‘Earth description’, and while the Earth continues revolving, there’s plenty of crucial work that helps us to describe and understand our effect on the planet and its impact on us. Ultimately, a Dulwich geographer is always happy when he’s got an OS map, a flask of tea and an ornamental rock on his desk.

ENGLISH Applying For Unemployment Christoph Marshall

S ince the dawn of civilisation, people have never felt quite content with an existence that focuses purely on the practical concerns of staying alive. They have used poetry, prose and theatre to convey one message, told in countless storylines – our time here is not to be wasted. Through the beauty of a Shakespeare sonnet, we see the beauty in our own lives; through the tragedy of Dickens’ darkest moments, we see the flaws that just as easily blight our own societies. People of the 21st Century search for meaning

in their own ways; but it’s worth noting that the wildly popular Breaking Bad – revealing life’s mysteries through an exploration of the human mind, rather than a dry, narrative recitation of facts – is an amalgamation of the same themes that captivated the audiences of Dr Faustus and King Lear . If you’ve ever felt sympathy or affinity with any character in any of the myriad narrative forms with which this age has blessed us, you, too, see the meaning in English. If you haven’t, it’s not English that’s boring – it’s you.
