The November Meeting features three days of fantastic racing action

The Magic starts here

Countryside day, Friday November 16 Situated just minutes from the picturesque Cotswolds, Cheltenham Racecourse is the perfect location to embrace the best of what the countryside has to offer. Held on Friday November 16 this year, Countryside Day launches The November Meeting and is a celebration of the rural landscape. Alongside the incredible racing action, there’s a host of countryside interests to keep you entertained, from sheep herding demonstrations to hound parades, as well as the popular shopping village – the perfect place to pick up Christmas gifts or a new look for The Festival TM presented by Bulmers in March. With over 80 retailers stocking wares and fashion, there’s something for even the most discerning shopper. Post racing, there’s a chance to pick up a future star in the Tattersalls Ireland Cheltenham November Sale. After the

racing, watch as young prospects from the point-to-point field go under the hammer and more than £3.7 million is cleared in just over two hours. And even if you don’t have a spare 100K to spend, the sales arena is an experience to be savoured. Tattersalls could not have asked for a better advertisement for buying with them than Finian’s Oscar, who sold at the auction 12 months earlier and strutted his stuff in the Steel Plate And Sections Novices’ Chase. Colin Tizzard’s representative went on to lift Grade One honours in the Manifesto Novices’ Chase at the Cheltenham Gold Cup. It was a poignant moment as Finian’s Oscar’s victory came a few days after the death of his owner, Alan Potts, whose colours were also carried to glory by Sizing John in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Tizzard said: “To win this for Alan was great. There’s a fair bit of Alan in this horse to be fair as, when push comes

to shove, he keeps finding more and never gives in.” Another horse on an upwards trajectory was Nicky Henderson’s On The Blind Side, who took the Ballymore Novices’ Hurdle. And there was an international field for the Glenfarclas Cross Country Handicap Chase, with Frenchman Emmanuel Clayeux returning to claim second and third with Vicomte Du Seuil, and Urgent De Gregaine and Irish-trained old stager Cantlow finishing fourth. Unfortunately for them, Kingswell Theatre, for brothers Tom and Michael Scudamore, was not in the mood to be passed in front. The event is also a great fundraising opportunity – last year Cheltenham supported Countryside Alliance and World Horse Welfare on Countryside Day, and in 2018 the chosen organisations are Countryside Alliance and Racing Welfare.
