MAKE THE MOST of the 2019 May Day bank holiday with Race Night (Friday May 3) kicking off the long weekend. It’s Cheltenham’s final meeting of the season and a firm local favourite. As the only evening fixture at the iconic racecourse, amateur riders and trainers compete for the ultimate dream of winning at the Home of Jump Racing. It’s a time for families, friends and work colleagues to let their hair down and have fun. Entrance is affordable and racing continues until just before the sun goes down, after which there is music in the Centaur to help get the party started. Last year, the amateur riders brought Cheltenham’s season to a traditional close after an eventful evening. It started in the best possible fashion for trainer Phil Rowley and jockey Alex Edwards in the £25,000 Timico Mixed Open Gold Cup. The third-place finisher at the Festival’s St. James’s Place Foxhunter Challenge Cup, Barel Of Laughs, was made a 1-2 favourite to land this race for a second year in succession. Although he out-jumped Asockastar over the final two fences and defended the crown, he was given a bit of a shock Head out after work – why not bring a group of 10 or more to the Race Night evening and enjoy the end of season party in The Centaur? by the strong-travelling outsider. “He took a bit of winding up, but I knew he would run on going up the hill,” said Edwards. “His jumping was amazing the whole way round – absolute precision.” Winning owners Peter and Trish Andrews were equally thrilled. “He’s our Smad Place of the hunter chase world,” said Trish, referring to their Timico Gold Cup winner. “Coming back here as a 12-year-old, I thought he had it all to do, but he loves this place and he loves his job.” It wasn’t all smiles for the winning jockey and trainer in the Cheltenham Club Open Hunters’ Chase. Edwards had guided Battle Dust around the course and was first past the post despite the saddle slipping, but he had lost his weight and number cloth and had to be disqualified. Runner- up ExcitableIsland was given the race. Richard Bandey saddled the winner of the Connolly’s Red Mills Intermediate Point-To-Point Championship Final Hunters’ Chase for owner Anna Hill for the second year in a row when Fortune Bound popped up at 50-1. Another repeat Race Night visitor – for the sixth successive time – was Popaway, who was promptly retired after winning the Visit cheltenham.com Mares’ Open Hunters’ Chase. “She’s 13 now, and you’d hate for anything to happen to her,” confirmed her owner-trainer Pauline Harkin.
