Opelika Service Center Director Started On The Dock ‘IT ALL GOES BACK TO OUR CULTURE’ We're proud to Promote From Within , because doing so ensures our culture is carried forward by people who know what it means to wear the Averitt red. New Opelika Service Center Director WILLIAM MYERS knows all about the opportunities that are available, having started his Averitt career more than 30 years ago part time on the dock. William grew into a frontline leader role that he held for about 11 years, then he decided to move into sales for about 14 years. In light of a family relocation to Florida a few years ago, William transferred from Opelika to Jacksonville, where he served in an operations support position. When longtime Opelika Service Center Director GREG CLARK retired at the end of last year, William was promoted and moved back to fill the shoes of his longtime friend. “You hear about people being promoted from within, you see it a lot and you experience it in this company,” William explains. “Everywhere you look, you see people who started in other roles who have been promoted. It all goes back to our culture, and our people are the best ones to carry us into the future. I’ve been blessed to have been here 31 years. It’s a special place with special people.” According to William, his growth is the result of a total team effort. “Every position I’ve held, I’ve always had people who believed in me and worked with me and gave me training and tools to succeed,” he says. “And, of course, a willingness to learn and do whatever I’ve been asked to ensure our future.” William has practical advice for associates who want to grow in their own careers. “I tell people to ask questions and be willing to learn as much as you can,” he says. “But most importantly, help others as you grow together. Those opportunities were there for me, and they’re there for anybody who is willing to do that.” Learning has been a continual process for William throughout his Averitt career.
“I always tell people that there’s not a day that goes by that I haven’t learned something from somebody,” he says. “Whether that has been a regional vice president, a service center director, a platform or OS&D associate, a customer service associate and especially our drivers, I’ve learned from everybody.” Congratulations, William, on your recent promotion to Service Center Director, and thank you for sharing your growth story!
