2.9 Million College Students Engage In Waste Competition Across more than 200 college campuses in 43 states, mil- lions of students participated in the 2021 Campus Race to ZeroWaste competition, where they helped to reduce their waste footprint through waste minimization efforts, and the donation, composting, and recycling of more than 25.5 mil- lion pounds of waste. Due to COVID-19 pandemic closings and increased on- line learning, many Campus Race to Zero Waste campuses were unable to reach the success levels accomplished in past years. However, campuses unable to track and report their waste were encouraged to host online education and engagement campaigns. These online campaigns helped schools stay connected with their faculty, staff and students and encourage the con- tinued practices of good, safe waste reduction practices. Despite these difficult circumstances, this year’s tourna- ment engaged 2.4 million students and more than 500,000 faculty and staff for a total of 2.9 million participants. Participating colleges and universities donated, compost- ed and recycled 25.8 million pounds of waste, and kept more than 230 million plastic containers out of the land- fill. In eight weeks, participants prevented the release of 30,669 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent into the atmosphere, which is equal to avoiding the annual emis- sions from 6,463 cars.

Marquette County, Michigan, Receives Recycling Grant The American Beverage Association (ABA), in partnership with The Recycling Partnership, has announced that com- munities within Marquette County, Michigan, will receive a grant of $68,800 through the Every Bottle Back initiative. The funds will be applied toward the purchase of higher capacity recycling carts and recycling education materials for the 4,450 households in Marquette County, including Ishpeming,Marquette and Negaunee townships. This invest- ment is expected to yield more than 38 million new pounds of recyclables over 10 years. Through Every Bottle Back, the beverage industry said it is working to expand equitable access to recycling and edu- cate residents about how to best recycle in their community. This investment within Marquette County is the sixth of 12 initial projects that the American beverage industry has committed to fund under Every Bottle Back. Other projects include investments in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; Kenosha, Wisconsin; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Ohio’s Pleasant Township and the city of Whitehall; and Dallas-Fort Worth. ND Paper Plans New Recycled Pulp Operation The company will make about 200 metric tons of un- bleached recycled pulp per day at its mill in Old Town, Maine. ND Paper, an Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois-based producer of pulp, paper and packaging, plans to launch a new recycled pulping operation at its division in OldTown, Maine. ND Pa- per is the U.S. division of Nine Dragons Paper (Holdings) Ltd., a large containerboard producer in China andAsia with $10 billion of annual sales. The new production line will make about 200 metric tons of unbleached recycled pulp per day at full capacity. The Old Town mill plans to consume regionally sourced recovered paper, mostly old corrugated containers (OCC), as its prima- ry feedstock for the new recycled pulping operation. ND Paper said it expects to be at full capacity for both produc- tion and staffing of this line by the third quarter of the year. At full operation, the recycled pulping operation will support about 20 new jobs. ND Paper also plans to spend money locally and elsewhere in Maine on services such as fiber sourcing, operational and maintenance supplies and logistics. Long History According to ND Paper, the Old Town mill began opera- tions in 1860 as a sawmill, moving into pulp products in 1882 as the Penobscot Chemical Fiber Co. After multiple ownership changes over the years, the facility was idled in October 2015. ND Paper purchased the shuttered mill in October 2018 and has since invested millions of dollars into its restart. In addition to unbleached recycled pulp, the mill produces unbleached softwood kraft pulp. ND Paper operates four mills in the Unites States, as well as a corrugated packaging plant in Sturtevant,Wisconsin.

to the robot, the technology that the RoBB-AQC provides is based in NIR, which is very accurate at identifying materi- als, and that’s very important for us as MRF operators. Also, all equipment bought through Van Dyk comes with the full parts and service support of Van Dyk. Their support team responds immediately to any issue we have. And they have some very experienced technicians that we have gotten to know – Roberto Hidalgo, Josh Robbins, Tom Davis just to name a few. So that level of trust was certainly a big factor. Is there anything about RoBB-AQC that stood out to you compared to competitor models? Rodriguez-Piñero: Our RoBB-AQC is equipped with TOM- RA AS5 recognition.TOMRA is a leader in sensor-based sort- ing, and this is their latest recognition software. Our RoBB has multiple sensors for identifying objects, including: NIR, camera, laser, and metal detection. The ability to integrate TOMRA’s high resolution NIR stood out to us. NIR has unique capabilities in the recognition world. Two bottles from a packaging manufacturer can be identical in shape, color, and label but made with two different polymers. Only NIR can determine 100 percent which type of polymer each of those bottles are. Between our two Texas facilities, we have over 10 TOMRA optical sorters installed, and we have a comfort level with their capabilities. Our operators know how to maintain TOMRA ma-chinery, and our techni- cians know how to trouble shoot them. Another advantage of the RoBB-AQC is that it works with one arm on large width conveyors. This is important be- cause it can be installed easily in the plant without making any conveyor changes. Safety always influences our deci- sions at FCC.The RoBB is installed with a total enclosure so no one can access the arm of the robot while the machine is working. Bollegraaf designs their equipment keeping the safety of the end user in mind, and this was a very important factor in our decision making. Are you satisfied with the construction quality of RoBB-AQC and the installation process? Rodriguez-Piñero: The Van Dyk installation team is very thorough with close attention to detail. The mechanical installation of RoBB-AQC was very smooth because of Bol- legraaf’s expert design team. They design and manufacture their equipment to very precise custom measurements, and when RoBB showed up, it fit perfectly on top of the feed conveyor. The chutes and feed hoppers for RoBB’s recov- ered material are also well-designed with real MRF usage in mind. The feed hoppers are in just the right place to accept RoBB’s throws and are sloped in such a way so that throws don’t bounce out.The chutes flow into the bunkers in such a way that products are directed away from the chute to prevent clogging. You can really tell the equipment has come from an experienced system and retrofit builder. How is RoBB-AQC performing? Rodriguez-Piñero: The purity of what RoBB recovers is perfect. It picks material and places it into the correct chute at a high accuracy rate. RoBB works very well when it is fed consistently and the rest of the plant is functioning properly. We are absolutely happy with the performance!TheTOMRA high resolution sensors, the gripper, and the proper design

Plastic IQ (Cont’d from Page 1) It is reportedly paired with a robust Solutions Database of resources and implementation guidance. “Walmart supported the development of Plastic IQ to help companies better understand and identify solutions that can improve their plastic packaging strategies and min- imize their plastic waste,” said Kathleen McLaughlin, EVP and Chief Sustainability Officer at Walmart. “Without ac- tion, it’s estimated the annual flow of plastic into the ocean could nearly triple by 2040.” Plastic IQ translates leading industry research into person- alized, data-based action plans, helps companies quantify the trade-offs in their decisions, and allows users to model how outside forces, such as policy or technology chang- es, may impact their efforts to reduce plastic waste. It also recognizes companies that set impactful targets to address plastic waste and realize their circularity and corporate sus- tainability goals. Plastic IQ has been guided by a group of brand owners, retailers, and organizations to ensure its max- imum impact for industry. As of May 5, 2021, the following companies have committed to use Plastic IQ and signed on to help catalyze the change needed: Colgate-Palmolive Company, Grove Collaborative, Happy Family Organics, Johnson & Johnson Consumer Health, Kellogg Company, Mondelez International, Nestlé USA, Unilever, andWalmart. Republic Paperboard, Voith Innovate Coater System Republic Paperboard recently installed and commissioned a new curtain coater system, which was built by Voith and will allow Republic to produce coated Gypsum Linerboard for the first time. To achieve its goal to produce coated Gypsum Linerboard, the mill needed a new DF Coat curtain coater system that could efficiently apply a specialty finish.Voith’s solution for Republic is a new innovation that, instead of using expen- sive white fiber to get the needed color and finish, now uses a fiber base and applies a coating for color and finish. The effort by Voith and Republic to develop the curtain coating innovation was part of a larger rebuild project at the mill. Voith also supplied a stock preparation upgrade, new dryer cans, the coater system itself, a new reel and a new coater kitchen. Also part of the package was a wind- er rebuild. Further, a special bypass section was supplied that allowed the mill to produce uncoated sheet. These elements were primarily installed earlier in the spring of 2020,with final coater start-up taking place throughout the summer of 2020.

and placement of the chutes all play a role in the success of the purity. And it is reliable. We can get a consistently high level of performance from RoBB throughout each shift, day after day. When deciding where to place RoBB-AQC, why did you choose to apply it where you did? Rodriguez-Piñero:We considered placing RoBB in several spots in the Houston MRF. One was at the end of the con- tainer line sorting HDPE-natural from HDPE-color. Another was as a “last chance” sorter, rescuing value out of the end of line residue. In the end, we choose the mixed paper QC line and made RoBB’s two sorting tasks be: 1. Recovering outthrows (OCC) from the mixed paper. We get a higher value for the OCC when selling it as OCC rather than as part of the mixed paper bales. 2. Recovering prohibitives (bottles, cans, film) from the pa- per. This helps us improve mixed paper quality while recov- ering high value Aluminum and PET from paper. What do you see the future looking like at a waste processing facility? Do you see the equipment and available technology changing significantly in the next 5-10 years, and how? Rodriguez-Piñero: I see future MRFs having more and more intelligence. I see more predictable maintenance fea- tures on SCADA and on control systems for optical sorters. I see robots that have multiple recipes allowing us to quickly change settings as our inbound material changes. I see flexi- ble optical sorters that can eject OCC when we run resi- dential volumes and then be reprogrammed to eject white paper when we run commercial/school volumes. Would you consider adding another robot? If so, where do you think you would apply it to most bene- fit your system? Rodriguez-Piñero: We’ve observed so far that the RoBB works very well sorting 2D materials. So, I would consider adding another one on the quality control lines for any 2D products. Avery Dennison To Cut Carbon Emmissions Avery Dennison announced its ambition to be net-zero on greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This commitment comes as the company raises the bar on its sustainability goals with new targets for 2030. As part of these new targets, the Label and Graphic Mate- rials (LGM) business commits to 100 percent of its core film and paper product categories globally containing recycled or renewable content. And all of its regions will also have labels that enable the circularity of plastics. This will en- sure that Avery Dennison is well-positioned to satisfy cur- rent or future recycling, composting or reuse requirements for single-use consumer plastic packaging. The company is also expanding its portfolio to include more intelligent la- beling to advance the communication of data, reduce costs and waste, and create better recycling processes. The specific 2030 targets fall under three broad sustain- ability goals: deliver innovations that advance the circular economy; reduce environmental impact in operations and supply chain; and make a positive social impact by improv- ing the livelihoods of people and communities. In addition, the company’s 2030 ambitions include pro- curing paper exclusively from responsibly-managed for- ests to help ensure a deforestation-free future. LGM will continue to invest in industry collaborations like CELAB to promote and deliver matrix and liner recycling globally, and the company will engage with the majority of its di- rect suppliers on their environmental and social practices affecting water, human rights, fair business, forestry, and similar important interests. The company has also pledged to reduce emissions by 70 percent against its 2015 baseline, and to work with its supply chain to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 30 percent against its 2018 baseline. The company’s overall ambition is to produce net-zero emissions by 2050 and enable a fu- ture of regeneration. The 2030 goals also include targets for gender diversity, employee engagement and inclusion, safety, and more. Coalition To Advocate For Composting Investments Six trade groups and non-governmental organizations tied to organics recycling have formed the United States Com- posting Infrastructure Coalition. The new coalition reports that it will “support innovative and responsible waste reduc- tion and recovery solutions like composting.” The coalition members include the U.S.Composting Coun- cil, the NationalWaste & Recycling Association (NWRA), the Plant Based Products Council, the Institute for Local Self Reliance, the Biodegradable Products Institute, the Foodser- vice Packaging Institute and Corn Refiners Association. Signing up as advisors to the new group are the Natural Resources Defense Council, Closed Loop Partners, ReFED, theAmerican PublicWorks Association, the U.S. Green Build- ing Council TRUE and the GreenBlue Sustainable Packaging Coalition.
