I rvin O verholtzer This book has been prepared especially for the training of new teachers of chil dren, in connection with the Home Bible Class program of the Child Evangelism Fellowship, which is spreading with great rapidity over the United States and Can ada. Instead of attempting an elaborate course of study, the author seeks to give each teacher the essentials that will qualify him or her' for this spiritual task in the briefest possible time. Since the teacher’s textbook is the Bible, the first lesson deals with how to use the Bible effectively as the ' “sword of the Spirit.” Then the way of salvation is set forth with great clarity. The purpose of the next two lessons is to deepen the new teacher’s own spiritual life. Soul-winning is the next subject, with stress upon its im portance, and instruction as to How to lead a soul to Christ. E llis Men of the next generation will appraise the work of Billy Sunday more fairly than his ^contemporaries were able to do, and this book will help in that fuller under standing of the man and his message. In his lifetime, Billy Sunday probably led more people to make a public confession of Jesus Christ than did any other preacher. Startlingly unique in his personality and modes of aggression, he can be compared with no other evangelist. But in this book he stands forth in clear light. The human peculiarities show up, as well as the great overburdening desire to lead men to Christ. The account is fair and unvarnished and has the added advantage of being delight fully readable. Much space is given to Mr. Sunday’s;’ own work—his autobiography and a number of his sermons. Chapters by Mrs. Sunday and Homer A. Rodeheaver— the latter associated with Mr. Sunday as evangelistic singer for over twenty years —round out the story. There are numerous photographs and pen-and-ink action pic tures. 519 pages. In a day when the value and authority of the Constitution are being challenged or questioned, Christians will do well to study Mr. Gilbert’s evidence that the Con stitution of the United States is based upon the Ten Commandments and the teachings of Christ. In explanation of his motive in undertaking this study, the author states: “As a student, I observed that teachers who were outspokenly antireligious and vio lently critical of the Bible were invariably antagonistic to the Constitution as well.” He shows that the idea of divine moral law as supreme over both rulers and ruled is a distinctly Anglo-Saxon d o c t r i n e . He quotes many eminent British and American jurists, as well as important Supreme Court decisions, to show the close parallel between the Ten Commandments and the Constitution, particularly the p o r t i o n known as the “Bill of Rights.” Repeatedly the Constitution is shown as a protection against communism and dictatorship.
