looking back there comes a chuckle of confidence—-“He hath done all things well.” ' — O swald C hambers . JUNE 10 Secondary Causes “And he took the seven loaves and the fishes, and gave thanks, and brake them, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude" (Matt. 15:36). There are secondary causes in the spiritual as well as in the natural world. Christ is here breaking the bread to the multitude, but He does not give it to the multitude directly; He give's it through a medium. He puts it into the hands of the disciples and tells them to give it; the divine blessing comes through a secular channel. . . .Lord, make me one of Thy secondary causes. I would be the conscious distributor of Thy Bread to the famished crowd, the conscious minister of Thy strength to the fainting multitude. I would take into my hands the bread which Thou hast broken, and in my turn I would break it anew. . . . I would receive from Thee the power and will to give. — G eorge M atheson . JUNE 11 All Hushed “My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him” (Psa. 62:5). Here is the true attitude of devotional stillness before God. Dr. Kay’s rendering of those words is very beautiful: “Only on God wait thou all hushed, my soul.” In Him alone is the refuge of which the psalm speaks. And He is to be sought in stillness of soul. The value of the silent hush before the footstool of the Almighty is one of the lessons most needed—and needed by us all. The days are wildly hurrying . . . We should often do more effective work if we were less outwardly energetic. And, “be thou silent unto God,” says the marginal reading in the Revised Version: not silent from prayer and worship, but hushed in them. “In the shadow of His wings There is rest.” The silence of the heart’s worship may be more worthily designated as praise, than the loudest songs of many of earth’s choirs.; - —Tfo Christian. JUNE 12 On the Battlefield of Prayer “Fight the good fight of faith” (1 Tim. 6:12).' We are taught that we are to strive as a soldier strives on the battlefield. “Fight the good fight of faith.” There are sol diers who could tell you better than I could what the strife of the battlefield means. I do not think any of us have a conception of the way in which soldiers labor on the battlefield. I have read accounts of many conflicts, and that is the impression left on my mind—that there is hardly any labor which man does that is so intense as the labor of the battlefield... If the soldier does not put his whole heart into it, he is sure of defeat. Have we not often been utterly defeated in prayer? Have we not knelt down to pray, and because the heavens seemed as brass, and the earth as iron, have we not turned away from this blessed exercise, and been utterly defeated? We have not been true soldiers in this respect,
striving as the soldier fights, until victory comes. —G. H. C. M acgregor . JUNE 13 The Shining Heart “God . . . hath shined in our hearts" (2 Cor. 4:6). You will have observed that the “shin ing” of the saints of GodSsuch as Moses in the Old Testament, and Stephen, in the New, and even our blessed Saviour Him- selfSwas in connection with death . . . . Wherever there is the death of self by the power of the Holy Ghost, there is the shin ing face. We cannot see God and live. The Lord has established and instituted a new Order—the Most Holy Order of the Shining Heart; and to this Order every Christian witness is bound to belong. “God . . . hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” — C harles A. Fox. JUNE 14 Fullness of Praise “I will praise thee, O Lord, with my whole hearf’ (Psa. 9:1). The psalmist awakes his entire person ality, and devotes all his manifold powers to the ministry of thanksgiving—“with my whole heart.” The word “heart” is a spacious word. It includes the will, the power that lies behind all the faculties, the energy that contributes resolution and purpose and directive force. It includes the intellect. When a man comes to the ministry of praise, his memory must be wide awake. He must be able to search his yesterdays, to gather up their sug gestiveness, to behold the broad marks of Providence, to see the gracious dealings of the King. He must “call to mind the things that have been.” “Thou shalt re member all the way which the Lord thy God led thee.”- —J. H. J owett . JUNE 15 Strengthened in God “Walk before me, and be thou perfecf’ (Gen. 17:1). We have here an exhortation to practical godliness: “Walk before me.” And it is based upon what God is : “I am the Al mighty God.” The meaning of the name El-Shaddai—or Almighty GodBis the “all- sufficient One.” . . . Abraham was not able to walk before God, and be perfect or thorough and upright. But God was able. Abraham’s ability was in God. It was this revelation of God to his soul that exactly met his need. It was the vision of what God was to him that strengthened his faith. . . . For every “I need” in self, there is an “I AM” in God. “Against me earth and hell combine; But on my side is power divine; Jesus is all, and He is mine!” — S elected . JUNE 16 Questions for the Saved One “Every man’s work shall be made mani fest" (1 Cor. 3:13).
