JUNE 20 Victory after Defeat
I am saved—but would I gladly, Lord, leave all to. follow Thee ? > Could I answer, when Thou callest, “Here am I, send me, send me” ? —Missionary Link.
I
“Samuel took a stone . . .and called the name of it Ebenezer, saying, Hitherto hath the Lord helped us". (1 Sam. 7 :12). . This was the place where the ark had been lost (1 Sam. 5:1). It was the place of defeat. Israel was victorious in this in stance because the people returned from a trust in the ark to a trust in the living Lord. Confronted in the, former battle with the enemy, they had said, with a superstitious belief in the ark, “Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the Lord . . . that, when it Cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies.” It (the ark) could, however, by itself do nothing for them, and not until they said to Samuel (7:8), “Cease not to cry unto the Lord our Qod for us,” did they obtain victory against the Philistines. . . . Only when the Lord helps - are we really helped; only after the victories won' by Him can, we set up our stone “Eben ezer.”- — F . W . D odd ,;:,. The “in Christ” of our standing is the foundation of all practical godliness, of all Christian service. We must start here,, or w || cannot take a single step in the way of holiness. . . . Included in this statement is also the thought of fellowship. To be “in Christ” in this sense is to have the consciousness of Uis favor. . . . We are commanded to v“abide” in-Christ. That which has reference to our judicial stand ing cannot be a matter of exhortation. Those who have taken their)stand in Christ—who are justified—are now re quired to remain, to dwell, or abide’ in Him. . . . The “in Christ” which has to do with our experience and walk, which relates to our sanctification, is constantly a matter of exhortation in the Scriptures. , — E van H . H o p k in s . JUNE 22 What Pleases God? “To obey is better than sacrifice" (1 Sam. 15:22). We are often talking of the walk that pleases God. What does that thought com prise? . . . Of all that it. comprises,, is there anything that is more important for us to- remember than this, that what pleases God most in His children, is their obedience to His wilj? It is possible for one, after a manner, to be trusting the Lord’^r.love and care, to be much .occupied in His work in the world, and to be giving generously to His cause, and yet not to be perfectly pleasing. Him, because of. some little acts of disobedience to His will which are al lowed to go on,from day to day. . . . The one sure way into a life of fuller blessing, remains what it has ever been, the way of obedience. —W. H. JUNE 23 The Relaxation of Faith “I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father . . . the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it . . ." (Gen. 28:13). Jacob took possession of the promised land by stretching himself upon it, and going to sleep. There is no surer way of taking possession of a promise than by placing your whole weight upon it, and then enjoying a hearty rest. “The land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it.” JUNE 21 Exhorted to Abide “Abide in me” (John 15 :4).

JUNE 17 Condemning Sin
“Know ye not, that so many of us as •were baptized into Jesus Christ were bap tized into his death?” (Rom. 6:3). A Bechuana Christian exclaimed in the enthusiasm of his newly found faith: “The cross of Christ condemns me to become a saint!” His words contain an all-important truth, for they at once reveal the real pur pose of the Saviour’s death and the true object of the,Christian’s life. That object is not chiefly the forgiveness of sins, not a title to heaven, not deliverance from the wrath to come, but a saintly walk. God has called us to be saints. Happiness, pardon and■;heaven are subordinate. Holiness is the element in which salvation and heaven are to be found. It is unspeakably mean of me to claim to be one with Christ in the freedom from sin’s punishment, which His cross secures, and not one with Him in His relation to the hateful sin itself. ,¿7—J. G regory M antle . JUNE 18 Accepting the Activity of Another ‘‘Sit still . . . until thou know how. the matter will fall” (Ruth 3 :18). These two solitary women [Ruth and Naomi] were able to still each other and themselves by remembering that Boaz had their matter in hahd, and that he was both able and eager to carry it through. They might sit still because he would not sit still. They might rest simfe he would not. Their cause was safe in his hands, and he would see it to the end, whatever it might be. Happy is it when we can thus hand over our many anxieties ’land burdens to the Lord, and be sure that He has assumed them, bears them in His heart, and wilk not rest unttil He has seen them safely to the end. “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for his rfret not thyself.” ; ■—Alliance Weekly. JUNE 19 All Ours “Who giveth us richly all things to enjoy” (1 Tim. 6:17), The word should smite down all anxiety. What would you think of a millionaire who in the midst of his wealth was despairing of sustenance, and dreading death in the poorhouse? And what do the angels think of you, if, with all the mercy and every blessing of God crowding around your life, you doubt, and despond, and despair of care and love and provision? . . . All the life of Jesus, if'we will, may come to us and be in u s; for we, through Him, are heirs of God, possessors of every needed grace. “ A ll grace is th in e, all prom ises, all po w er— O m nipotence itself, if th ere is need; W h o leans o n m an , leans on a bro k en reed; W h o leans o n G od is; co n q u ero r every h o u r; “ A ll h eav en is th in e, u p to its h ig h est th ro n e; T h e h arp , th e allelujahs, an d th e psalm , T h e robes all w hite, th e g o ld en cro w n ; th e p alm — A ll, all are th in e, since C h rist is ever th in e.” — J.
