While on earth, Christ made His disciples many promises of reward. . . . For boats and nets, He promised thrones and scep ters. For every form of worldly loss, they were to have an appropriate indemnity and spiritual gain. The fruits would, in every instance, be many times greater than the seed sown. Now surely the vainest man that ever lived could not believe that he had really earned for himself rewards be stowed on so splendid a scale. The very magnitude of the blessings conferred puts them forever out of the category of pay ments by God for work done. Nay, fur ther, it humbles us to think of such over flowing kindness.-—J. D. R obertson . JUNE 28 Unmindful of Self “I f thou be the Son of God, command that these stonei be made bread" (Matt. 4:3). No miracle could be done which did not come from the Father. “The Son can do nothing of himself.” To take the adminis tration of miraculous power out of the Father’s hand would have been the gross est rebellion of spirit. It would have shown the deepest distrust. “Take care of yourself’ was the whisper of Satan, in the whole region of the flesh and its needs ; “God takes care of Me," was the answer of the Son. . . . The privilege of love is to be so occupied with God, who says, “Go,” and with men to whom we are to go, as not to think of self in any such connection.—J. E lder C umming . JUNE 29 Under His Wings “He shall cover thee with his feathers" (Psa. 91:4). As Bunyan says in his Pilgrim’s Prog ress, there are four calls by which the hen calls in her brood. The first is the call of night, when they need a shelter from the dampness and from the darkness. The second is the call for food, when the hen would attract her little ones to pick up some dainty morsel that she has found for them. The third is the call of danger, when the hawk descends, or the brood is in peril. And the fourth is the call of love, when, with motherly desire and yearning, she would gather her brood where they may feel the softness of her breast-feathers and the warmth of her own body. Thus “He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust.” —A. T. P ierson . JUNE 30 Meeting Every Need “Open thy mouth wide, and I will fill i f ’ (Psa. 81:10). In the verses that immediately follow the invitation, the Lord tells what He would do for the people whom He has redeemed if they would hearken to Him and walk in His ways. He declares that He would soon subdue their enemies, not withstanding that in the past His chosen ones had turned away from Him and walked in their own counsels, as apart from and opposed to the divine will. Nay, more, He would not only deliver them from the power of their adversaries, but would also abundantly satisfy them with temporal blessings.' . . . We may surely take it for granted that for those who are living in happy fellowship with God, blessings are assured that will not only meet their tem poral needs but also their spiritual neces sities.— Life of Faith.
How often have I fotind the promise true to my own self when I have accepted it as truth, and acted upon i t ! I have stretched myself upon it as upon a couch, and left myself in the hands of the Lord; and a sweet repose has swept over my spirit.— C harles H addon S purgeon . JUNE 24 Men Who Have Failed "A bruised reed shall he not break” (Isa. 42:3). You cut a reed from its root, and, as is a very common custom in Syria today, you use it as a staff on which to lean. When the road leaves the plain, and begins to climb the hill, you lean more heavily upon your staff, and often it happens that the reed fails you, and becomes cracked. Now what can you do with a reed which has failed you, which has collapsed beneath your weight just when you needed its support? Why, complete the destruction! . . . And is not this a symbol of how we, too, commonly treat our brethren who have failed us? ., . With what hasty impatience we cast off the treacherous brother, and throw him aside as an utterly worthless and hopeless thing 1 But that was not the Master’s way. He would not break the “bruised reed.” He was tenderly pitiful toward men who had failed Him. ^ E -J . H. J owett . JUNE 25 Friendship with Christ “But I have called you friends" (John 15:15), All that know anything of the sacred bond of (rue friendship—even when it but unites a mortal to his fellow mortal—know that it renders each more careful of the feelings of the other. The believer is care ful of the feelings of Christ; Christ is careful of the feelings of the believer. Christ is the believer’s Friend; the believer is Christ’s friend. He writes His law in the hearts of His people; they write their prayers in His heart.— G eorge B owen . JUNE 26 Separated from the World “Let my people go, that they may hold a feast unto me in the wilderness” (Ex, 5:1). What a volume of truth is contained in that sentence! It sets forth, in plain and forcible language, the blessed purpose of the Lord God of Israel to have His people completely delivered from Egypt, and sep arated unto Himself, in order that they might feast with Him in the wilderness. He would free them not only from Egypt’s brick-kilns and taskmasters, but from its temples and its altars, and from all its habits and all its associations, from its principles, its maxims and its fashions. . . . The world is to the Christian what Egypt was to Israel, only, of course, our separa tion from the world is not local or physi cal, but moral and spiritual. It was a real, out-and-out, through separation for Israel, and it is the same for us. —Things New and Old. “Every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren . .. shall receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life" (Matt. 19:29). God’s requital of our services is seen to be not of merit, but purely of grace. . . . JUNE 27 Overflowing Kindness
