The Household of God E phesians 2:19

out of heart and life. No condition or position is helped by anxiety. When we recognize that the Lord knows and feels and cares, then all anxiety is banished. —F. E. M arsh . Small Things God often uses weak instruments to ful fill His purposes. A Rod (Ex. 4:2). A Jaw-Bone (Judg. 15:15). Five Smooth Stones (1 Sam. 17:40). A Handful, of Meal and a Little Oil (1 Ki. 17:12). A Cloud the Size of a Man’s Hand (1 Ki. 18:44). A Mustard Seed (Matt. 13:31). Five Barley Loaves (John 6:9). God’s Direction “In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths” (Prov. 3:6). 1. Where—“in all thy ways.” 2. What—“acknowledge him.” 3. Why—“he shall direct thy paths.” —O utlined A ddresses . Prophecy Fulfilled in Christ B y W illiam O lney Genesis prophesies the woman’s Seed; Each sacrifice foreshadows Christ should bleed; History—in type—foretells the Com ing One, The Son of David—greater Solo mon ; In the poetic books the longing soul Aspires to Him, of all her hopes the goal; , The prophets stand and cry, “The Lord is near! He whom ye seek shall suddenly appear” ; Gospels and Acts alike display the Christ, His birth, His miracles, His words unpriced, His cross—the bruising of the ser pent’s head— His cleansing blood, His rising from the dead, The coming of the Spirit to impart Christ’s spiritual presence to the heart; All the Epistles at His glory aim, That faith may see the treasure she can claim; And Revelation shows the Lord on high Throned by the Father’s side, in majesty. The gospel’s scarlet thread runs through the Word, “It’s spirit is—the witness to the Lord.” ■■';—I ndian C hristian . — F. J. H opkins .

The Fact of Grace The Lord says, “My grace is." We need to recognize its fact by our faith, that we may enjoy it in our experience. We have seven witnesses to prove it. 1. David said it (Psa. 23:1). 2. Moses enjoyed it (Deut. 33:16, 26,27). 3. Daniel proved it (Dan. 6:22). 4. The three Hebrews experienced it (Dan. 3:17). 5. Peter declared it (1 Pet. 4:10). 6. John confirmed it (2 John 3). 7. Paul knew it (1 Cor. 15:10). —P rophetic N ews . Proving God “Prove me now, herewith, saith the Lord of hosts” (Mai. 3:10). I. God’s Challenge. 1. To the sinner (Isa.-1:18; John 7: 17). 2. To the Christian. a. For the supply of temporal needs (Psa. 34:9, 10; 84:11; 37:25). b. In the matter of consecra tion (Rom. 12:1, 2). c. In regard to prayer (1 Ki. 18:37, 38; 2 Chron. 7:14; Phil. 4:6, 7). d. In the matter of gifts (Mai. 3:10-12; Lk. 6:38). II. The Answer. He is “able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us” (Eph. 3 :20).—H. H. M ac A. Some one has commented on this as follows: “God forsaken by God.” The only ground upon which any one is for saken by God is on the ground of sin. Since Christ took the sinner’s place, He must bear the sinner’s punishment. God can not dispense His mercy at the ex pense of His justice. He satisfies His own claims in Christ, and saves the believer because of what the Lord has done. II. The Saint’s Question. “Why are thou cast down, O my soul? And why art thou disquieted within me”- (Psa. 42:11)? When the soul is “disquieted within,” there is sure to be a casting down without. Disquietude may arise from the fierceness of temptation, the tor ture of doubt, the haunting of fear, the pressure of circumstances, and the weakness of the body. The cure is to trust in God. I I I .. The Searching Question. “Why are ye anxious” (Matt. 6: 28, R. V.) ? Care will cause heart-distraction, will rend the spirit, and will take, the joy Three Questions of Moment I. The Saviour’s Question. “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me” (Matt. 27:46) ?

A Spiritual Family (Eph. 3:15). Born of the Spirit (John 3:5). Inhabited by the Spirit (Rom. 8:9). Taught by the Spirit (John 14:26). Led by the Spirit (Rom. 8:14). All are brethren (Matt. 23:8). The Saviour’s Offer Jesus said, “Come unto me” : 1. For pardon (Eph. 1:5-7). 2. For comfort (Isa. 51:2, 3). 3. For health (Matt. 8:16, 17). 4. For strength (Phil. 4:13). 5. For holiness (John 15:4, 5). 6. For peace (John 14:27). 7. For joy (John 15:10, 11). 8. For rest (Matt. 11:28). 9. For happiness (Prov. 13:17, 18). 10. For eternal life (John 6:47). —W esleyan M ethodist . Listening In “Hearken to me every one of you” (Mk. 7:14). “Hearken unto me . . . my called” (Isa. 48:12). “Hearken unto me, my people” (Isa. 51: 4). “Hearken diligently” (Isa. 55:2). “He that is of God heareth God’s words” (John 8:47). “Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth” (1 Sam, 3:9). “He that heareth and believeth hath life” (John 5:24). “Let him that heareth say, Come” (Rev. 22:17). “Be doers . . . not hearers only” (Jas. 1 :22).—W m . L uff . Lot the Backslider G enesis 19 I. Lot’s Faith (2 Pet. 2:7, 8). He was a believer—“just Lot,” “righteous soul.” II. Lot’s Sin (Gen. 13:9-13). 1. He had two alternatives offered him. a. The hills and fellowship with God. b. . The plains and worldliness of Sodom. 2. He chose the plains and the world. III. Lot’s Loss. 1. He lost his fellowship (Gen. 19: 1-3). 2. He lost his testimony (Gen. 19: 4-9, 14). , 3. He lost his family (Gen. 19:14, 32-38). 4. He lost his property (cf. 1 Cor. 11:15). IV. Lot’s Salvation (Gen. 19:16-21). 1. Purely of grace (Eph. 2:8, 9). 2. As by fire (1 Cor. 3:11-15). 1—G race and T ruth . —L ife of F aith .
