Firstly its place as the first colony in the British Empire and the development of colonization techniques on its shores leave Newfoundland the starting point of a phenomenon which has been said to have created the modern world. The colony also paved the way for Anglo settlement of North America, setting in motion the events which would lead to the creation of the USA and therefore it must be seen as a contributor to the actions of that nation and the profound consequences, both positive and negative, that America has had on human history. Due to its place at the heart of early American settlement Newfoundland must also be seen as the beginnings of the mostly non-deliberate yet crushing ethnic cleansing of the indigenous peoples of the Americas, particularly in the Northern continent, with many ancient cultures forcefully driven of their land, or destroyed completely at the hands of Europeans and their descendants.

Charlie Dee When someone refers to a modern, thriving democracy my mind will immediately think of a liberal one, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive. Liberalism has a couple of important main features, for example: civil rights, rule of law and tolerance. I would like to think that Britain has got one of the most liberal democracies in the world, everyone is treated equally in the eyes of the law and we are protected through the Human Rights Act (1998). One of the main examples of our individual rights is freedom of speech. JS Mill stated this was the most important because it allows for individuality, which is the key to social progress. However, does this actually serve the benefit of all?
