the Thames barrier being in need of repair in twenty years’ time. Even though storms aren’t that much of a problem for the UK nowadays, global warming could lead to many more problems. Not only is global warming an issue for the UK but it is having serious implications all over the world. The ice caps are melting at such a rate that by 2070 there may be no ice left. Also in parts of North Africa there will be droughts that last decades such as the 30 years drought that the Sahel is experiencing now. It is coming to the point at which the damage we are doing to our environment almost irreversible. Even if we cease all emissions right now we will still feel the effects of global warming for the next 100 years. More than 1 million species have become extinct due to global warming destroying habitats. It is also predicted that between 2000-2100 there will be a rise of 15 million heat related deaths. Not only does this create huge problems in the world but it also costs the UK government. Even with all the problems at home the UK government still spends £11.7 billion on foreign aid. Immigration was an important talking point during this year’s general election. Immigration isn’t the problem, it is the quantity of immigration that

is taking place into the UK. Immigration is happening at such a rate in the UK that there is an immigrant entering the UK almost once a minute. In 2007 1 in 3 people were born outside the UK. The problem with this is that it is costing the UK government money. It is estimated that immigrant from outside Europe cost the government over £120 billion over the last 17 years. It is also claimed that native Britain had a total loss of £531 billion over those 17 years as taxes increased and jobs were lost as well as wages falling. Not

only this, but it also creates conflict between the immigrants and the people that are originally from the UK. As there is a higher population then there is more competition for jobs. Even though unemployment is falling there are more British born people that are finding it very hard to get a job. On top of this mass immigration is holding back the wages as there is an increase supply of workers but not an increased demand for the goods. This means that more people are willing to work for lower pay and therefore and keeping the wages down. Penultimately the UK is currently facing a huge budget deficit. The UK are currently in debt worth a staggering £1,495,484,740,264. This figure is so big that the UK owes every person on earth £23,101. There are many problems with a high budget deficit. For instance, in trying to cut this budget deficit the government has to increase taxes and decrease public spending. Cuts into the public sector effect the UK citizens as it means things such as the NHS don’t run as well as they don’t have the funding that they need to function properly. It also means that the UK will receive less investment. This is because company or countries are less likely to invest if there is already huge debt as it will mean that there is a lower chance of them getting paid back. This would also shrink the private sector as the government would have to borrow more. Cutting the budget deficit will help the UK government as it will increase confidence of no only its people but also of future investments.
