GREGG CHAMBERLAIN gregg.chamberlain@eap.on.ca Vars market is a go!
the local diocese for use of St. Andrew’s Anglican Church property at the corner of Rockdale Road and Devine Street as the site for the market. Six vendors are now con- firmed for the market and the VCA is open to inquiries from local and regional crafts, art and other types of vendors who would fit into the community market image. Sé- guin noted that there is still a strong like- lihood of having more fresh produce ven- dors available to set up tables later in the summer following the first harvest. The VCA website at www.vars.ca has con- tact information for vendors interested in becoming part of this year’s community market program.
VARS | Yes, Vars will have its own farm- ers market attraction. The first day of the event will just be a bit delayed. Jean Séguin, Vars Community Associa- tion president (VCA), confirmed during a phone interview June 29 that the pro- posed community market for the village will be a reality this summer. It just won’t be open for the start of July. “We’re still on,” Séguin said. “We’ve de- layed the official opening by two weeks.” The VCA began looking into the feasi- bility this year of having a farmers market style venue for the village similar to those that have become a popular summer tra- dition in neighbouring Cumberland and other communities like Vankleek Hill and Ottawa. The association has an agreement with SERVICES COMMUNAUTAIRES DE PRESCOTT ET/AND RUSSELL COMMUNITY SERVICES Don «In Memoriam» pour venir en aide aux aînés.

Volunteers supporting the Holmes family of Russell, whose son Matthew is await- ing a bone marrow transplant, raised almost $20,000 on June 15 and 16 in two events. Shown at the end of the garage sale held Saturday are a few of the 50 volunteers. Eight-year-old Matthew has acute leukemia and is awaiting a bone marrow trans- plant and the family has significant expenses associated with his treatment. Col- leen Strban of Russell was one of the principal organizers and she was astonished by the generosity of the community. The first event was a Friday Night Social night hosted by the Russell Fire Department at the Russell House Pub at which $6900 was raised. The second event was a huge garage sale held in the Russell arena parking lot. Community members donated items and volunteers organized them for easy shopping. The sale brought in $12,600.
