Junior Challengers own the pitch CANDICE VETTER candice.vetter@eap.on.ca League format of warm-ups, basic soccer drills, and games.

“Some siblings joined the team,”said Chal- lenger’s coach and former RSC president Nanno Habets. “Which was a great idea as it increased the participation among more reluctant players.” Habets also added that the inaugural season was great, and it cul- minated in the game against the U10 girls. Habets said sport programs for develop- mentally challenged kids are valuable but few and far between. Coaches included Amber-Leigh Herault, Jennifer Walsh, Dan- ika Levesque and Jennifer Morris. The team now looks forward to next year’s challenge and hopes to remain the club’s only undefeated team.

RUSSELL l The Junior Challengers, a Rus- sell Soccer Club team fielded by children with developmental issues, took on the Russell Raiders U10 girls competitive team and dominated the pitch with a 10-1 win. The Challenger program started eight years ago and those children grew up to be young adults who still play soccer. This year the club started another Challenger program for younger children. Jennifer Gei- gel, who runs Connecting Pieces, a centre in Embrun for special needs children, is gen- eral manager, and acted as liaison between families and the club. In June, the new team started playing in the program following the standard House

RUSSELL l People who love horses will love this year’s edition of The Russell Fair, September 5 to 8, which offers three excit- ing equestrian events. The Shilo Riding Club is running the Super Gymkhana Western Games on Friday night at 6 :30 p.m. “This will be the second year doing a night show,” said organizer Liz Mil- ler. “And it’s beautiful under the lights.” The gymkhana features equestrian races and games of skill in the western style. The roots of gymkhanas in Canada and the U.S. come from British Indian traditions (gymkhana) and the First Nations of the American west (Omoksee), producing a uniquely North American fusion. At 11 a.m. on Saturday morning and 9 a.m. Sunday morning the Fall Cutting Horse competition, organized by members of the Eastern Canada Cutting Horse Associa- tion, which is based near Russell, will hold the Eastern Ontario Cutting Horse Finals. Cutting horses are used to separate cattle, and very experienced riders on smart, well- trained horses make a vaccinating day or round-up go more smoothly. The finals will be exciting to watch. Other animals will be part of competitions throughout the four-day fair too. Thursday at 7 p.m. Holstein heifers will be shown and

This year’s fair, (Sept 5-8) promises plenty of equestrian action.
