Debrief - Mentoring skills

DEBRIEF – MENTORING SKILLS

The origin of the idea of mentoring goes back to Greek mythology as found in The Odyssey, a tale about mentor and his protégée, Telemachus. Mentor was asked by Odyssey to "teach the young prince the skills needed to become a warrior, leader of men, head of household, and future king". The mentoring that took place was by no means haphazard, but intentional with specific goals. There was no part of Telemachus' life that was not under the leadership of Mentor. MENTORING - A GOAL ORIENTED PROCESS Mentoring in the corporate framework has to be goal oriented. This form of mentoring focuses on specific goals with a shorter time window and results-oriented framework .

SENSE OF PURPOSE

THESE ARE TO BE POSSESSED BY THE MENTEE TO HANDLE ABNORMAL SITUATIONS. THE MENTOR NEEDS TO HELP MENTEE ACQUIRE COMPETENCIES. THESE ARE REQUIRED FOR ROUTINE JOBS. A MENTOR HELPS THE MENTEE UNDERSTAND THE GAPS IN SKILLS PRESENT AND SKILLS NEEDED. MENTEES COMING FROM A DIFFICULT BACKGROUND DELIVER BETTER PERFORMANCE. A MENTOR NEEDS TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT TO HELP MENTEES DISCOVER THEIR POTENTIAL. AS MENTORS YOU WORK AT THIS LEVEL. PERFORMANCES OF THE MENTEE ARE SUBJECT TO BELIEF. THESE ARE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. A MENTOR USES A MENTEE VALUE SYSTEM AS AN ADVANTAGE. VALUES AND BELIEFS CREATE ATTITUDE. THE MENTOR WHEN WORKING ON THE ENVIRONMENT ENSURES A SHIFT IN THE ATTITUDE OF THE MENTEE. ATTITUDES TRANSLATE INTO BEHAVIOUR. MANAGERS, NOT COACHES/MENTORS, OPERATE IN THIS LAYER.
