LeDroit Park
38
One of DC’s first suburbs in the 1870’s, LeDroit Park has become one of the most sought after neighborhoods in NW DC. Bordered by Howard University, North Capitol St and Florida Ave., this city-centered neighborhood has a rich and storied past. Several famous Americans either grew-up in or lived-in the neighborhood at some point in time. Internationally-known comedian Jackie “Moms” Mabley, US Senator of Massachusetts Edward "Mo" Brooke, Howard Medical School founder Dr. Ernest Y Williams, famous educator Dr Anna Julia Cooper, AFL- CIO founder Samuel Gompers, poet Paul Laurence Dunbar and film and stage star Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero (aka; Chita Rivera) all lived in LeDroit Park. Today, LeDroit Park’s proximity to award winning restaurants on North Capitol St., Rhode Island Ave. and Florida Ave., as well as the famous Howard Theater and 9:30 Club, give this neighborhood an unrivaled array of cultural and entertainment walkable venues for LeDroit Park residents. Booming retail along Florida Ave, including the brand new Whole Foods, a local farmers market on R and 1st St., Big Bear Coffee and other local coffee shops, as well as DC bars like Boundary Stone and Tyber Creek Wine Bar, contribute to the bustling vibrancy of this gem of a neighborhood. The Neighborhood is serviced by two metro stops: Shaw/Howard and Noma stations. And road access in and out of the city, no matter which direction you’re headed, is easy and convenient.
