The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience.’ The Baz Luhrmann classic offers up some great life advice, take it or leave it, but remember to wear sunscreen. Ardmac are celebrating 45 years in business, what was once a small Irish operation is now the leading provider of high-tech cleanrooms, data centre solutions, fit-outs, specialised refurbishments, EV battery and turn-key manufacturing facilities across Europe. Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don’t be afraid of it, or what other people think of it. It’s the greatest instrument you’ll ever own. Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room. Read the directions, even if you don’t follow them. Do not read beauty magazines; they will only make you feel ugly. Get to know your parents; you never know when they’ll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings; they are your best link to your past and the People most likely to stick with you in the future. Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you Should hold on.

Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young. Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft

Don’t mess too much with your hair, or by the time you’re 40, it will look 85. Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it’s worth

Construction workers, who spend most of their time working outdoors have a higher-than-average risk of skin cancer. At Ardmac, we are following the Sun Smart Code to reduce the risk. 9/10 cases of skin cancer are caused by the sun’s UV rays and can be prevented. By covering up, seeking shade, wearing sunglasses and using suncream you can help protect yourself.

Respect your elders.

Don’t expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.

Host in Ireland have partnered with Scalp Nursery & Wicklow Hospice to provide sunflower seeds for a 4-acre field in Wicklow. A donation to Wicklow Hospice has already been made on Ardmac’s behalf for the August 4th Event. The sunflower fields are open to the public daily from 10am - 4:45pm. P.S. Well done to Ryan Rocks who competed in the Irish Fitness Championship in Waterford at the start of July. Ryan finished in 7th place overall in a field of 30. Punching himself in the face during a clean complex with 136kg but holding on to secure 3rd in that workout and then in the final falling off from 15ft on rope climbs around 6 times as he couldn’t hold on anymore.

Choosing Courage and facing your fears Are you waiting for the fear to go away before you do the thing?

This is a common mistake we make with fear. The truth is that it doesn’t go away. We simply figure out how to face it. Courage involves acknowledging the very real presence of the fear, and taking action alongside of it. It can be terrifying, but you can do it.

Try This Here’s our three-part process for practicing courage:

1. Face it: Give it a name; what, exactly, is the fear? Say it out loud or write it down.

2. Remind yourself: When have you overcome scary things in the past?

3. The smallest step: What’s the smallest step you can take towards it? Now, take it.

All-Ireland Pollinator Plan 2,000+ Orchards Planted all around Ireland

Ardmac are proud to announce that we have signed up to the All-Ireland Pollinator Plan again this year. This is an island-wide attempt to reverse declines in pollinating insects. Host In Ireland are the proud founders of the DC’s for Bee’s initiative which inspires corporate partners, community groups, schools and individuals to plant orchards which provide an essential early Spring food source for pollinators. Bee pollination contributes to 70% of the world’s crops and the success of our species is dependent on theirs. Sadly, nearly one third of Ireland’s bees are facing extinction, thus Host in Ireland decided to take action. In 2021, the initiative saw 1,262 orchards (6,310 trees) planted across 32 counties for the first time in Ireland. This year, Host in Ireland are increasing their target, from 1,000 mixed fruit tree orchards to 2,000. This will see the equivalent of 10,000 trees planted across Ireland. Ardmac have pledged to take 25 orchards this year and we plan to distribute them around our local community in Swords. When it comes to environmental responsibility, we apply our Respect Always guiding principle and make efficient use of natural resources. Ardmac are proud to be involved with an organisation that is making a significant positive difference. The actions taken by Host In Ireland, Ardmac and all partners ensure that we are doing our part to protect Ireland’s bee population.

People don’t realise how many different roles are available to women within the engineering industry, even on site. My first job was on site, it was very hands on, and I really enjoyed it. Everyone I worked with on that job was very encouraging. It is very important for women to know; engineering is open to everyone. “ Read Monica’s full interview HERE “My interest in Engineering came from the subjects I enjoyed at school: math’s and science. The problem-solving aspect in math class and the teamwork involved in solving new equations just made it very fun. It was during my gap year, when I was visiting countries with important features like the Hoover Dam in Nevada and seeing the mechanisms involved with its construction, through to its use, that I knew I wanted to do something within engineering. Understanding the way things work and their capabilities was something I enjoyed, and it encouraged me to pursue mechanical engineering. “

In the 45 years since its inception, Ardmac has earned itself a reputation not just for delivering results but for exceeding client expectations. This has not gone unnoticed; what was once a small Irish operation is now the leading provider of high-tech cleanrooms, data centre solutions, fit-outs, specialised refurbishments, and turn-key manufacturing facilities across Europe. Group turnover within Ireland alone last year was €75m, while overall turnover was closer to €135m. The past 12-18 months have seen Ardmac complete a whole range of significant projects across Ireland, the UK and Europe; these included a 15,000 sq.m. cleanroom facility for Wuxi Biologics in Dundalk, a large microelectronic project in Kildare, several Data Centre projects in Europe and several high-end commercial fit-outs in Ireland and the UK. Key recent wins have included large Pharma facilities in Limerick, Cork and Finland, Data Centre projects in Denmark, Germany and Austria, and Battery facilities in the UK. Ground Supported Hot-Aisle Containment Increased demand for speed of construction and a willingness to invest in MMC (Modern Methods of Construction) is resulting in innovative modularised data centre fit-out solutions. Ardmac’s GS-HAC (Ground Supported Hot-Aisle Containment) is a data centre air-flow management solution that can function independently to the building-frame or primary structure. Installation of the product can commence as soon as the floor is ready. The GS-HAC solution enables early schedule activity for critical data hall services which can be fully supported by the GS-HAC frame. Pre-assembly of the GS-HAC frame using DfMA software and fabrication methodologies results in delivery of several large pre-assembled frames that are fixed together on site in quick succession. Using this solution results in early commencement and completion for following trades, meaning that the overall construction and commissioning program for a data hall can be shortened. the Germfree Roadshow Continues The Future of the Delivery of Modern Medicine. Germfree had a fantastic day with Gary McAuslan and the aCGT Vector team at St James Hospital Dublin last month, showcasing the Germfree mobile cleanroom. aCGT Vector are developing disruptive technology to transform the way CAR-T cell therapies are manufactured. Germfree Europe are working with aCGT Vector to locate mobile cleanroom manufacturing systems in cancer centers of excellence which will eliminate complex logistics challenges, dramatically reducing the cost of the novel personalised medicines and thereby increasing patient access. This is a hugely important Irish innovation for healthcare provision, a snapshot of the future of point-of-care delivery of modern medicine.

Interrupt “Benevolent” Sexism on Your Team

As a leader, you have a responsibility to address “benevolent” sexism: attitudes, practices, and actions that seem positive but undermine supporting women at work, often under the pretense of helping, protecting, or complimenting them. (For example, not offering a high-visibility project to a woman because she has young children.) To interrupt benevolent sexism, start by increasing your awareness. Reflect on how ideas such as “men are responsible for protecting women” or “men and women are different and complementary” can actually be harmful. Check your assumptions about how people should or shouldn’t act based on their gender. Then, if you hear others making benevolently sexist comments, challenge them. For example, if a colleague wants to “save” a woman from a complex project, help them zoom out by asking: “What are the consequences of not involving her in this project? Wouldn’t it be better to ask her directly instead of assuming she won’t want it?” Finally, model equitable behavior by focusing on women’s competencies. Give feedback related to work results, instead of characteristics stereotypically associated with women, such as warmth or likability.

Mickey Donnelly is a 10-year-old boy living in the Ardoyne area of Belfast at the height of the Troubles. The Good Son spans a difficult summer where he dreads starting secondary school in the autumn, he’s terrified at the prospect of having to go to brutal St Gabriel’s school because his mother can’t afford to send him to the more civilised St Malachy’s Grammar School. Mickey’s a smart, sensitive child, the kind of boy who doesn’t fare well in a macho environment. Other kids call him gay because he’s more comfortable playing with girls and his only real friend is his little sister Wee Maggie. In the absence of any decent male role models – Mickey’s dad is an abusive alcoholic who only returns to the family home whenever he needs money – he learns about life through film and TV. It also allows him an escape from the veritable war zone of his surroundings. He lives in his head and dreams of someday going to America to make his fortune like his heroes. For me, The Good Son isn’t about the Troubles, rather, it’s about a little boy who loves his mummy, his little sister and his dog who will take on anyone that threatens or hurts those he loves, no matter how big or scary from his older brother, his Dad, other kids, the IRA. He fights the despair, the bleakness, and the violence. He fights the Troubles. And after you read you will know Mickey Donnelly is just the one for the job.

We often take our lungs for granted, breathing without ever having to think about it, but for those with chronic lung conditions, it is not always such a simple process. The COVID 19 pandemic has also been an eye opener for many people who have not previously been affected by poor lung health, and there has been a new appreciation for keeping our lungs as healthy as possible.

Smoking It’s dangerous. Seek out resources to help you stop. Second hand smoke is also a concern. Pollution By following air pollution forecasts, you have an indication of when air pollution is particularly bad, and you maywant to limit time spent outdoors. It may also be useful to avoid exercising outdoors next to high traffic areas. Excersise Aerobic exercise and breathing excersices can help to improve general health and lungs

Vaccinations Vaccinations- one of the best ways to prevent the spread of certain diseases is through vaccination programmes. Vaccines stimulate your immune system to produce antibodies so that your body is able to recognise and fight an infection without having to get the disease first. Visit your Doctor There are some cases in which you need to see your doctor, including if you have had a cough for more than 3 weeks, are finding it hard to breathe, if your cough is particularly bad, quickly getting worse, or you are coughing up blood, if you feel very unwell or have chest pain, or you’re losing weight for no reason.

David is the Associate Director for our Design & Build Business Unit. Starting with Ardmac at the beginning of 2018 David has progressed from Senior Contracts Manager through an Operations Manager role before being appointed as the Business Unit Lead for Design and Build, which now incorporates our Modular, Building Offsite, department. Graduating from the University of Ulster in 1998 as a Quantity Surveyor, David worked during his studies for a Building Contractor where he gained broad experience in general construction, overseeing everything from project inception at tendering and pre-construction through to contract completion and agreement of the final account. Work Experience David’s career path changed direction in 2001 after learning of a workplace incident which led to a fatality onsite. That business adapted to develop and improve their systems and procedures to safeguard site operatives and as a result, David focused on safer operational delivery, moving away from being a commercially minded QS to become a more rounded manager ensuring safety was paramount to any programme. “The responsibility turned to me; after witnessing the impact throughout the business of such a tragic circumstance. I had to turn my mindset away from a pure commercial focus to ensure everyone understood their roles and responsibilities, safeguarding all operatives onsite. Coming from a non-trade background that was both a change of direction and a challenge with my peers, but that was the catalyst for my long-term career”. 2009 saw David return to a commercial role, being engaged as a Commercial Managers with a Tier 1 Main Contractor, turning his attention to framework agreements and pre-construction awards. “I was approached by a previous colleague and afforded an opportunity as a Commercial Manager working on Education Authority agreements including being involved in some of their operational delivery. This coincided with establishing a 95% Cost Certain Model for the major redevelopment of the Royal Commonwealth Pool, Edinburgh for the City of Edinburgh Council”. David recalls an intense 10-month preconstruction period targeting the 95% cost certainty for the Grade-A listed building, tendering sub-contract

packages through the OJEU process, evaluating bids from all areas of the European Union, aligning the project risk register and making recommendations for appointment. The R.C.P. as it was affectionately known, was reopened as a centre of excellence for UK diving and was used during the 2014 Commonwealth Games. “The entire external structural frame and façade was hydraulically propped, braced and supported to allow the complete internal structure to be broken out, excavated and rearranged to modern standards; forming a main Commonwealth sized competition pool, diving and training pools, all of which had state of the art movable floors; it was spectacular. That project cost close to £40 million”. Missing the hustle of daily life onsite David was attracted to move into the fitout sector with another Tier 1 company who specialised in high-profile Blue- Chip Retail, Leisure and global fashion houses. Some of their clients included Arsenal FC, Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Signet, World Duty Free, Breitling, Tag Heuer and Omega just to name a few. David’s speciality concentrated around airport development & fit-out. Beginning with Belfast International and then working across Leeds Bradford, Dublin T1, Birmingham and Belfast City finishing up developing units within the South Terminal retail area of Gatwick Airport, London. “We were initially awarded the World Duty Free Store at Gatwick South which was a new concession area as passengers left security control. A multi-million-pound development all of which was delivered within a 14- week period. It took many long shifts, working day and night much of the time, as the airport remained fully operational. We had a close relationship with the Main Contractor arranging several diversions for the many thousands of passengers who use the Terminal daily.

Even today when I’m passing through, I can still see the detail and work we put in, and it’s a great feeling knowing I was involved and managed that.” On the back of Duty-Free, Ernest Jones secured one of the retail units. As one of his most important clients their investment at the airport delivered another £1 million project in just under 9 weeks. “That particular project introduced several major watch brands to the Terminal and the store had some of the most exacting standards and pinpoint accuracy for each concession. The store area also sat within a smoke extract zone for the Terminal retail space and through some design ingenuity the team concealed this with a plasterboard ceiling, cut and shaped to replicate the Union Jack. This subtle feature trended on social media for many months after completion and can still be seen today”. Read full article here

In a difficult moment? Here are four science-backed strategies you can use:

1. Keep going. Remind yourself of your ‘why’ — the reason you’re doing this thing, pursuing this goal, or in this situation. Focus on the impact that it will have, the way it connects with a greater purpose, or the people you are currently helping with your efforts. Turn it into a game or a challenge, something that you can win. Make a tiny bit of progress towards it, no matter how small it is. Studies have found that this feeling of making progress is the single most important factor for having a good day at work. 2. Take a break. Step away from the task. When you are distracted from a problem, you often come up with those important breakthroughs. Your unconscious mind makes progress on the problem while you’re conscious mind is distracted (it’s called the ‘shower principle’, because so many good ideas come to us in the shower!) Rest and rejuvenate. Things are always a little bit easier to carry after you’ve taken proper care of yourself, had something to eat, or a good night’s rest.

3. Try a new path. Sometimes, consistently pushing at a task in the same way just entrenches you in being stuck. What if you threw your approach out and tried something totally different? Can you go around the problem, approach it from a different angle, or see it from a new perspective? What if you stopped pursuing the “right” path, and found a new one that works for you instead? 4. Ask for help. We’re not supposed to cope with all of our problems on our own; we need each other to solve them, figure out the right next step, and for support. Albert Einstein often talked about how important it was to bounce ideas off of his friends when he was developing his theories of relativity; he called his friend Michele Best “the best sounding board in Europe.” You deserve a sounding board, too! Every time you refuse to buy into the Old Happy myth that you have to do everything on your own, you’re also giving permission for others to do the same. Ask for help and offer help, whenever you can. Leaning on each other is what we are here to do.

This started out as a very original, really interesting but slow burn watch that suddenly ramped up to a fantastic finale. Wonderful cast, gorgeous visuals. A must watch that has been greenlit for season 2.

When the CIA’s most skilled operative-whose true identity is known to none-accidentally uncovers dark agency secrets, a psychopathic former colleague puts a bounty on his head, setting off a global manhunt by international assassins. Just another charming assassin redemption action movie. It has all it needs and delivers a fun, action packed watch. (Bar a very annoying, dumb, macho character decision.) If you like action, chase scenes, great oufits, beautiful city locations getting destroyed, Gosling delivered one liners and moustaches - this a good popcorn watch.
