Winter Ready BY SANONNA AL TAWEEL PHOTO BY FREEPIK.COM
W hen most people imagine winter in Colorado, I think they picture weather cold enough to wear cute coats and drink hot chocolate, but warm enough to spend an entire weekend outside enjoying nature. This is usually true in November and December, but Coloradans know that it’s just a mild preview of what’s to come. Our real winter weather begins in January and usually lasts until mid- April, and while January–March are prime months for skiing and building snowmen, it’s important to be prepared for the risks associated with the season’s cold weather. Layers, Layers, Layers! Colorado is known for being somewhat temperamental when it comes to its weather. You could wake up in the morning to a foot of snow, but by noon it might be 65 degrees and you’re suddenly sweating in your heavy coat. No matter the season, dressing in layers is necessary in Colorado so that you can easily adjust to the current temperature. Invest in Proper Winter Gear Those stylish gloves you’ve had forever might be cute, but are they actually warm enough for a winter outing? Invest in items that are made for cold weather rather than just fashion. Check that your winter coats, socks, hats, and gloves are warm, comfortable, and moisture-wicking. Make sure your boots have strong traction on the bottom to keep you from slipping on ice. Sunscreen Isn’t Just for Summer Grab some sunscreen and apply it before you go outside. Not only does Colorado boast over 300 days of sunshine, but snow also happens to be extremely reflective of UV radiation, making it extremely easy to get sunburned if you’re outside for even just 20
minutes. I once forgot to apply sunscreen before spending an entire day skiing. The result? I spent that month looking like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Pay Attention to Temperature and Wind Chill Generally speaking, if it’s below 32 degrees, try to go inside and warm up every 20–30 minutes. However, wind chill can greatly impact your warmth. If the temperature or wind chill falls below 13 degrees, try to stay indoors as frostbite can set in quickly. Keep a Winter Emergency Kit in the Car
Prepare a kit to keep in the back of your car that has all the necessities for a winter emergency. Pack it with a blanket, hand warmers, gloves, hats, a first aid kit, an ice scraper, a flashlight, and anything else you might need. Consider keeping a container of kitty litter on hand, too. It can come in handy to create traction underneath your car tires if the road is icy. Winter in Colorado can be beautiful, but very cold. Make sure you follow precautions to stay safe and warm in extreme weather. These simple yet effective tips can help you make the most of Colorado’s winter season.

5 Creative Ways to Spread
Valentine’s Day Cheer
BY SARAH LYONS PHOTO BY FREEPIK.COM
K ids enjoy exchanging cards and candy on Valentine’s Day, but the holiday can also be an opportunity to spread love and cheer to neighbors, friends, and those in need. Here are some creative ways you and your kids can show others the holiday spirit. RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS Get the kids involved and show someone a random act of kindness. Pay for the person
14 COLORADO PARENT FEBRUARY 2025
behind you in line at the coffee shop, take cookies to your neighbors, volunteer at a homeless shelter, visit with seniors at a nursing home, or collect coats and hats for those in need. Choose a cause close to your family’s hearts and do something that would benefit that charity. SHOW SOME HEART Consider contacting a local children’s hospital to create goodie bags for kids and families who are admitted. Most hospitals have a list of needed items, which may include books, art supplies, blankets, or stuffed animals for kids and chapstick, magazines, playing cards, and travel size toiletries for parents. Involve your kids in gathering the items and delivering them to the hospital
FURRY FRIENDS If your child loves animals, consider
volunteering at a local pet shelter. If you are unable to work there, ask what items are needed and organize a neighborhood drive to collect donations. You can also find ideas on Pinterest for homemade dog or cat toys to make as a family and deliver to the shelter. A SURPRISE DELIVERY Do some holiday baking with your kids and make a surprise delivery to your spouse, a grandparent, or a neighbor. You could also consider taking treats to teachers, or the fire or police station. Have your kids create homemade cards to accompany the treats. HOST A PARTY Invite your kids’ friends over for a Valentine’s Day party. Serve holiday-themed snacks and set up a craft or card-making station. Encourage the kids to make thank-you cards that can be sent to nurses, first responders, or members of the armed forces overseas. Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to just be about cards and candy, it can be about showing those around you that they are loved and appreciated. Get your kids involved by asking who they would like to serve or show kindness to this year. Work together to brainstorm creative ways to spread love to others.

What is an Early Learning Center? BY MADISON VOORHIES PHOTO BY TONODIAZ ON FREEPIK.COM
I n the past, childcare often meant dropping off your little one at the neighbor’s house or a local daycare where the primary focus was keeping them safe and entertained. Fast forward 50 years, and the concept of child- care has transformed dramatically. Enter the era of Early Learning Centers (ELCs), where the focus has shifted from simple supervision to fostering young minds through education and development—sometimes starting as early as infancy. Research shows that 90% of a child’s brain develops by age five, according to the Center on the Developing Child at Harvard University. This makes the first five years of life a critical period for growth and devel- opment. “During these early years, children must develop a love of learning and excite- ment about school,” explains Kath Courter, Preschool Director at Boulder Country Day School. “A child’s sense of ‘I am and I can’ is often solidified in preschool, and that confi- dence will help propel them through many more years of school and learning.” ELCs embrace these pivotal stages by blending structured education with playful exploration, ensuring that young learners are not only prepared for school but also for life. “Think of it like a high-tech construction proj- ect,” Courter suggests. “During the first years of life, children are literally ‘building their
brains’ and forming upwards of one million neural connections every second. These early experiences support everything else.” So, what exactly sets an Early Learning Center apart from the daycare of yesteryear? How do these modern marvels of early ed- ucation contribute to a child’s growth? And how can parents confirm the levels of safety and professionalism when choosing a center? DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS An Early Learning Center is an educational facility dedicated to nurturing the cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development of young children, typically from infan- cy through preschool age. These centers provide structured environments where children engage in age-appropriate activities designed to promote school readiness and holistic growth. Key characteristics of ELCs include: • Educational Focus: Unlike traditional daycare centers, ELCs focus on provid- ing an educational curriculum designed
child’s growth, including social inter- action, emotional well-being, physical coordination, and cognitive abilities. This comprehensive approach ensures a well-rounded early education experience. Qualified Educators: Staff at Early Learning Centers are typically trained in Early Childhood Education, enabling them to create engaging, developmen- tally appropriate learning experiences and to respond effectively to the needs of young children. Structured Environment: Classrooms often feature various learning centers or stations—such as reading nooks, art areas, and science corners—that encourage hands-on exploration and play-based learning. This setup allows children to learn through discovery and interaction.

•
In Colorado, the Department of Education emphasizes the importance of Early Learning Centers in providing children with a strong start. They highlight that parents also play a significant role in assisting student learning, while teachers and educators offer crucial
for young learners. This approach supports the development of foun- dational skills like reading, math, and problem-solving. Holistic Development: Programs are designed to foster various aspects of a
support to help children thrive. SETTING THE STANDARD
•
Speaking of the Department of Education, just like primary schools, ELCs have specific
16 COLORADO PARENT FEBRUARY 2025
state-mandated requirements they must meet to operate. In Colorado, ELCs are re- quired to obtain a child care license from the Colorado Department of Early Childhood, which mandates compliance with regula- tions covering aspects such as appropriate teacher-child ratios, facility safety standards, staff background checks, and emergency preparedness plans. This licensure ensures that centers comply with state regulations aimed at safeguarding children’s health, safety, and well-being, serving as the state’s “seal of approval” that the center meets the minimum standards necessary for operation. While state licensure is mandatory, ELCs in Colorado may also pursue voluntary accreditation to demonstrate a commitment to higher quality standards. One prominent accreditation is through the National Asso- ciation for the Education of Young Children, which recognizes programs meeting rigorous early childhood education criteria. Additionally, Colorado has established the Colorado Shines Quality Rating and Improvement System, which rates ELCs on a scale from Level 1 to Level 5 based on quality indicators. Participation in Colorado Shines is mandatory for licensed providers, and higher ratings reflect a greater commitment to quality improvement and excellence in early childhood education. For families navigating a wealth of options— from Montessori to Reggio Emilia, public to private, or neighborhood to destination schools—Courter encourages parents to trust their instincts. “Do your homework and follow your gut; the school that feels right is often the best fit for your child.” THE UNIQUE IMPACT OF ELCS When asked what makes ELCs truly special, Courter says, “Every Early Learning Center offers something truly special or unique. What matters most is that parents choose a program that fits their child, educational be- liefs, and values.” Through carefully crafted environments and personalized approaches, ELCs foster creativity, resilience, and a love of learning. Whether through play-based learning stations, tailored curriculum plans, or one-on-one time with skilled educators, these centers prepare children for a lifetime of success. As Courter passionately summarized, “Children who attend preschool gain lasting advantages that extend far beyond early childhood. The benefits of that decision will create a solid foundation that will support future learning for years to come.”

How Montessori Schools Are Accredited
BY SANONNA AL TAWEEL PHOTO BY FREEPIK.COM
M ontessori education has gained widespread recognition for its unique approach to early childhood learning. As more parents look to the Montessori philosophy for their young children, understanding the importance of accreditation becomes essential. Accreditation ensures that Montessori schools uphold the highest standards and can offer a true representation of the Montessori method.
20 COLORADO PARENT FEBRUARY 2025
WHAT’S A MONTESSORI SCHOOL?
to ensure that it meets specific standards of quality and adherence to the Montessori method. Accreditation serves as a mark of distinction, signaling that the school has met rigorous criteria related to overall educational quality. Here’s an overview of how the accreditation process typically works: Application and Self-Study The school begins by submitting an application to the accrediting body, often accompanied by a self-study report. This report includes a detailed overview of the school’s educational philosophy, teaching practices, curriculum, facilities, and staff qualifications. Site Visit and Evaluation After reviewing the self-study, the accrediting organization arranges for a team of evaluators to visit the school. The evaluation team typically includes experienced Montessori educators and administrators who observe classrooms, interview staff, and assess whether the school faithfully implements Montessori principles. They also review the school’s policies, teacher training, student assessments, and overall operational practices. Compliance with Standards The school must demonstrate that it meets the accrediting organization’s standards, which may include criteria related to: • Teacher certification (Montessori-specific training) • Curriculum implementation (fidelity to Montessori methods) •
typically involves submitting updated self- assessments and undergoing site visits to confirm that the school’s practices remain aligned with Montessori principles. HOW TO FIND ACCREDITED MONTESSORI SCHOOLS If you decide to enroll your child in a Montessori school, finding an accredited institution is an important step to ensuring your child receives an authentic and high- quality Montessori education. Here are some steps to help you locate accredited Montessori schools in your area: Check Accrediting Organizations’ Directories The best place to start is by checking the websites of major accrediting organizations like the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) or the American Montessori Society (AMS). Both organizations offer online directories that allow you to search for accredited Montessori schools by location. These directories include detailed information about the school’s accreditation status and the programs they offer. Visit the School’s Website Once you have a list of potential Montessori schools, visit their websites to see if they mention their accreditation status. An accredited Montessori school will proudly display its certification and provide details about the accrediting body. If the website doesn’t provide clear information, you can contact the school directly to inquire about their accreditation status. Research Reviews and Parent Feedback Look for reviews and feedback from other parents about their experiences at the school. Parents who have had children enrolled in accredited Montessori programs can provide valuable insights into the school’s adherence to Montessori principles and the quality of the educational experience. Accreditation plays a vital role in ensuring that Montessori schools uphold the integrity of the educational philosophy. Whether you’re considering a Montessori school for your child, or already navigating options, understanding the accreditation process helps you make an informed decision. While not all Montessori schools are accredited, verifying accreditation status can provide peace of mind, ensuring that your child receives an authentic, high-quality education that will nurture their love of learning for years to come.
For those unfamiliar with the Montessori philosophy, it is an educational approach that fosters independence, curiosity, and a love for learning in young children. Developed by Dr. Maria Montessori in the early 1900s, the method is based on the belief that children learn best when they are free to explore their environment at their own pace, guided by their natural interests. Unlike traditional schools, where teachers direct the learning process, Montessori classrooms encourage self-directed exploration with hands-on materials. BENEFITS OF MONTESSORI SCHOOLS With an emphasis on respect, responsibility, and individualized learning, the Montessori approach to education aims to nurture intellectual curiosity, emotional understanding, and strong social skills. The encouragement of self-guided learning in the classroom empowers children to take an active role in their education. Research has shown that Montessori students often demonstrate higher levels of creativity, critical thinking, and academic achievement than traditional school students. WHAT IS ACCREDITATION & WHY DOES IT MATTER? Accreditation is a formal process by which educational institutions are evaluated and certified by accrediting organizations to ensure they meet established standards. The entirety of a school is considered in the accreditation process. The school’s programs, teaching practices, curriculum, facilities, and administration are all taken into account to ensure that the institution meets guidelines. Accreditation is a voluntary process. Though many Montessori schools strive to adhere to the methods of the Montessori philosophy, not all pursue accreditation due to high costs, time commitments, or administrative hurdles. However, it’s important to note that an accredited Montessori school typically offers a higher level of assurance that the school meets established guidelines for program quality, teacher certification, and educational practices. If a Montessori school decides to pursue accreditation, the institution undergoes a formal evaluation process by a recognized accrediting organization, such as the Association Montessori Internationale (AMI) or the American Montessori Society (AMS) HOW ARE MONTESSORI SCHOOLS ACCREDITED?
