BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS IN DANCE
The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dance is the most intensive undergraduate course of study for aspiring professional dancers. At Dean, you will train under veteran performers, directors, and choreographers who will help prepare you for your dance career. Our talented alumni have gone on to work for companies such as Disney, Norwegian Cruise Lines, Urbanity Dance Company, and Boston Ballet. Many of our students also go on to pursue graduate studies in dance, most recently at New York University, The Ohio State University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. For more than 50 years, Dean’s dedicated faculty and staff have been leading exceptional training in ballet, jazz, tap, modern, and related techniques, combined with exploratory coursework in choreography and production. At Dean, you will have the opportunity to participate in numerous performances, and will even begin performing on stage in your first semester. BFA Dance students will have the choice between one of the following specialized tracks: Choreography —You will engage with each step of the choreographic process and learn how to develop and communicate your own artistic vision. Additionally, you will gain a sophisticated understanding of dance making, dance concert production, problem-solving, and effective communication. Performance —In this track, you will hone your strength and discipline through advanced technique training in the studio and on the stage. You will learn and engage in skill sets, practices, and perspectives of today’s professional-level dance.

A minor in Dance is ideal if you are seeking a comprehensive understanding of various dance techniques, theories, and performance practices. This minor is an excellent complement to a major in a related field such as theatre, arts leadership, or exercise science, but students in any bachelor’s degree program may opt to complete a Dance minor.
By blending our well-rounded technical training with a purposeful liberal arts curriculum, you will be prepared for success both on and off the stage. Beginning year one, you’ll have the opportunity to perform, create, and engage in real-world experiences.

BA IN DANCE TRACKS While not required, you may also choose a track in your area of interest for a customized dance education. These include: Dance Pedagogy —Learn the art and science of teaching dance from experts in this field. You will gain knowledge on the history of dance, how to utilize clear language while educating dancers, age-appropriate teaching methodologies, and the current state of dance education. Performance/Choreography —Demonstrate overall technical proficiency by engaging in practices and perspectives of professional-level dance. You will also gain an increasingly sophisticated understanding of choreography. Dance Science —Focus on the intersection of dance and health sciences in this field with access to Dean's Athletic Training Clinic for the Performing Arts. While following a streamlined curriculum that balances artistic and scientific rigor, you will gain hands-on experience in an on-campus clinical setting focused on injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance optimization for dancers and performing artists. Studio Management —Gain the essential skills necessary to successfully run and manage a dance studio. Learn the principles of business management and marketing, dance pedagogy, facility management, and much more. Whether you’re aspiring to open your own studio or looking to enhance your managerial skills in an existing one, this track provides the practical knowledge and expertise needed to thrive in the competitive dance industry.

Athletic Trainers on Staff —Dean is proud to be the only performing arts program in New England that employs certified and licensed athletic trainers with extensive experience working with dancers. The trainers provide a multitude of services including injury prevention workshops, backstage medical coverage during all performances, and more. Performance Opportunities —There are numerous concerts and showcases available for our dancers and opportunities to audition for one of our various student-run dance teams. Many of our dancers also earn roles in Dean’s Main Stage musical and theatre productions. Additionally, Dean participates in the American College Dance Association’s (ACDA) Regional Festival, and choreographic works by Dean students have been chosen for performance in the ACDA gala at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Master Classes —Dean provides master classes to our dance students, providing the opportunity to work with artists from touring dance and theater productions. Previous organizations we have worked with include Boston Ballet, Cirque du Soleil, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Ballet West, Martha Graham Dance Company, Manhattan Dance Project, and Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Staff Musicians —Staff musicians collaborate with our dance faculty in many of the technique classes. Some of our accompanists are also composers who create original music for performances. Interdisciplinary Options —Dance majors at Dean may also seek to expand their education in liberal arts. There are many classes and majors in complementary areas to choose from, including arts leadership, biology, business management, early childhood education, exercise science, and theatre.

Musical theatre is one of the most exciting and demanding genres in the performing arts. At Dean, our rigorous Bachelor of Fine Arts degree provides comprehensive musical theatre training to help you grow as a performer, including: • Individualized vocal lessons • Acting for song • Music composition and theory • Dance and movement technique classes • Production and design Additionally, your coursework will include audition techniques, scene study, script analysis, theatre history, and on-camera skills. Beginning your first year, you will have the opportunity to participate in plays, a vocal ensemble, and a variety of musical theatre productions, working closely with our expert performing arts faculty and guest directors/ choreographers. You will also have the chance to network with professionals in the industry by participating in master classes, internships, auditions, competitions, and workshops throughout your time at Dean. Our Main Stage productions, black box student productions, and a senior showcase provide students with a conservatory experience in a liberal arts setting. Dean’s Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Theatre degree encompasses performance, theatre studies, and production and design. The balance of practice and theory provides a holistic education in the art and study of theatre, helping students identify and grow their unique artistic identity and path. Our goal is to help you succeed in a career where you can utilize your skills to create and produce work in various ways. Our faculty offers diverse perspectives and fosters a tight-knit, collaborative community in which you’ll thrive. During your time as a Theatre major at Dean, you will have the opportunity to participate in our First-Year Theatre Showcase, Main Stage musicals and plays, as well as our Senior Showcase. BA IN THEATRE TRACKS BA Theatre students choose to specialize in one of the following tracks: Performance —With expert acting and performance training, you will gain a comprehensive understanding of the theatre and musical theatre repertoire in this track. An emphasis will be placed on voice, acting, dance, and movement techniques. Production and Design —This track will provide you with hands-on experience in technical theatre: design, lighting, sets, props, costuming, and stage management. You will work behind the scenes to help make our stage productions a reality, while gaining live theatre experience in various settings, including dance, musical theatre, cabaret, live music, and stage plays. General Theatre —Emphasizing an in-depth exploration of theatre history, dramatic literature, and performance theory, this track is designed to help you build a vibrant and long-lasting career as a citizen artist. This track has been designed with flexibility in mind, allowing our students to explore interdisciplinary work, studying away, and/or pursuing a double major. All of the BA Theatre tracks feature our signature mix of specialized coursework in theatre techniques and fundamentals with a broad foundation in essential subjects like English, history, art, music, math, and science.
A minor in Theatre is ideal if you want to explore the performing arts alongside your primary field of study. It will provide a comprehensive understanding of various aspects of theatre, including acting, stagecraft, and script analysis. This minor can complement many majors by enhancing skills such as public speaking, teamwork, and writing. Students in any bachelor’s degree program at Dean may opt to complete a Theatre minor, which consists of 18 credits.

Students majoring in Arts Leadership at Dean are required to take courses in four key areas: Arts —You will engage in studies that foster a deeper understanding of various artistic disciplines, providing you with a broad cultural foundation. This training will enhance your ability to support and manage artistic endeavors within the entertainment industry. Business —You will learn about the challenges that arts and entertainment operations are facing today and how to successfully lead an organization to a more secure future—from the facility to finances, event management to marketing, and human resources to legal matters. Focused Electives —You will broaden your specialized knowledge by choosing elective courses such as venue and facilities management, live event planning and management, creative entrepreneurship, theatre pedagogy, and portfolio creation and dramaturgy. Liberal Arts —By taking courses in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics, you will be well-equipped to be a full participant in today’s complex global society.
