From Goofy Leap to Forever Home How a 25-Pound Fluffball Changed Our Family Forever

I’ll never forget the day a 25-pound ball of fluff came bounding through the tall grass and changed our family. I took one look at this dog, one look at my wife, and I knew — as he made that goofy, clumsy leap — he was coming home with us. I’ve had dogs my entire life and know they are loyal companions who bring joy and friendship whenever you need it. Dogs are also teachers, showing us an almost child- like, unconditional love. Feb. 20 is National Love Your Pet Day, and my family’s Bernese mountain dog, Weston, gives us plenty of reasons to love him on a daily basis. From the way he follows my wife like her fluffy shadow to his naps in the snow, he’s part comedian, part empath, and a lot of fun.

pick up a shoe — not necessarily hers, just any old shoe — and then run away. Literally, she is the only one he does this with. One of the other funny things he does is sleep on the tile floor to cool down right

We drove to Midland, and my wife kept saying, “I’m not going to take this dog home.” But then, that silly dog bounded right into our lives. Here’s the thing: I knew the minute we got in the car that a dog was coming home with us that day, and I was doubly sure the second I saw him leap.

at the bottom of the stairs. At night, you always have to peek before you take that final step so you don’t step on him. We like to say he’s protecting us.

Weston is a master at reading emotions and then letting you know how he’s feeling. He does what we call the Berner Lean. He likes to lean against something or someone when he sits or lies down. Leaning is one of his love languages, and he won’t do it if he doesn’t trust someone, but it doesn’t take long. After you’ve come over a few times, he’ll lean right on you like, “Hey, tell me you love me.” We may never know precisely what he’s thinking, but Weston wants to make us happy. Whether it’s laying his big head on your lap or eagerly sitting by the door when he knows my wife is coming home, he always shows he cares. Weston’s heart is as big as his paws, and we’re grateful for the joy, laughter, and companionship he brings to our lives. –Kyle Matthews 1 (248) 543-0340

Weston is our family dog, but he’s my wife’s living shadow. If it’s just me, my mom, or the kids, Weston can nap for a good portion of the day. But when my wife is home, he’s awake the whole time. If she switches rooms, Weston is right behind her — he absolutely loves her. He even talks to her.

Decluttering sentimental items can often tug at the heartstrings, turning a well-intentioned clean-up session into a stroll down memory lane ( without decluttering anything ). However, with a sprinkle of creativity and a dash of organization, you can transform this emotional task into a fulfilling journey. Here’s how to declutter with joy and without regrets! SENTIMENTAL SORTING WITH STRATEGY When it comes to sentimental clutter, every item seems to tug at your heartstrings. To navigate this emotional landscape, employ the three-box method: one for keepsakes, one for giveaways, and one for those undecided items. For the keepsakes, focus on functionality. If an item can be used regularly rather than stored away, it makes the cut. This method clears your space and ensures your items are meaningful and useful. Then, follow through, donate the giveaways, and commit to reexamining the undecided items in the future. HOW TO EVALUATE EMOTIONAL VALUE Not all treasures are worth their weight in storage space. When deciding on items like family heirlooms, consider their stories and significance. Are they precious family artifacts or just items passing through generations without purpose? Understanding the history of an item can clarify its importance, or lack thereof, in your life. If it’s valuable beyond sentiment — think antiques or rare collectibles — getting a professional valuation can guide your decision on whether to keep, sell, or donate. REPURPOSE WITH PURPOSE What to do with those memory-filled items that don’t quite fit anywhere? Get creative! Transform old T-shirts into a cozy quilt, or turn drawings into framed art. Repurposing gives these items new life and a place in your home beyond the attic. If you’re not ready to part with something, consider photographing it for a digital memory book. This way, you keep the memories alive without the physical clutter. EMBRACE SPACE OVER STUFF It’s easy to fall into the “what if I need it someday?” trap. Here’s a little trick to help you move past this hurdle: Ask yourself if the item is easily replaceable and whether it costs less than $50 to replace. If yes, it’s probably safe to say goodbye. Chuckle at the chaos, dance through the piles, and remember that every item you let go of is a step toward a lighter, more joyful living space. Let’s make room for new memories, minus the mess! Valentine’s Day is all about celebrating love, but as you enjoy the holiday treats, it may result in unexpected stains to your favorite date night outfit. From a spilled glass of red wine at a romantic dinner to a smudge of chocolate, these pesky clothing mishaps can leave a lasting mark. With simple tricks and tips, you can ensure your clothes stay as fresh as the love in the air around you. CHOCOLATE Chocolate takes longer to soak into fabrics than most liquids, so the quicker you get to the mess, the better. Begin by gently scraping as much chocolate as possible off the garment with a spoon. Be careful not to press too hard, as this could embed

the stain even deeper into your clothes. Next, apply a little liquid laundry detergent or a stain remover to pre-treat the garment. From there, follow the care instructions on the label to determine the proper water temperature. RED WINE Red wine is another Valentine’s Day staple that can be difficult to remove from clothing. Try to blot (don’t rub!) away as much of the spill with a paper towel or washcloth as soon as possible. You can use a damp sponge with cool water to clean the stain afterward. If you are dealing with a large wine stain, you can soak the garment in cool water for 30 minutes. There are a few different techniques to remove the stain.

You can opt for a pre-treater, applying a few tablespoons of white vinegar and club soda or a mix of dish detergent and hydrogen peroxide. Check the care label and spot-test your garment. Wash the item in the machine as you usually would. MAKEUP To remove makeup stains like mascara and lipstick, you can apply detergent or stain treatment directly to the stain and wash the clothing in the warmest water that’s safe for the garment per the care instructions. Remove any excess makeup carefully. You can dab oil-free makeup remover on the stain with a cotton pad if it hasn’t had time to soak into the fabric.

4 Appreciate the Wonders of Eternal Flame Falls

EARTH’S ETERNAL FLAME A Glimpse Into a Mystery of Nature

Visitors to Eternal Flame Falls, a unique, naturally occurring gas flame emanating from the ground near Orchard Park, New York, often describe it with feelings of awe. A natural gas leak from deep in the ground fuels the Eternal Flame, and a waterfall tumbles down from a rock face between hikers and the flame, creating a grotto-like effect that draws scores of visitors year-round.

ethane and propane in addition to methane. The research team also noted a series of other small gas seeps within the shale layer where the Eternal Flame flare originates. One geologist on the team theorized that the gas might have been produced within the shale by a different process that scientists have not yet identified.

In addition to gas combustion, natural eternal flames can be created by peat fires or coal seam fires, ignited by lightning, human activity, or electricity caused by tectonic stress. Humans often create and maintain eternal flames, too, to commemorate people or events. In the U.S., manmade eternal flames burn at Ground Zero, the site of the 2001 terrorist attacks, and the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

Natural gas emissions from the Earth aren’t uncommon; however, the flame that gives Eternal Flame Falls its name is unique in several ways. According to a team of Italian and American geologists who investigated the leak in 2013, the gas is released at a relatively shallow depth of about 1,300 feet underground. The lukewarm shale surrounding its origins is much cooler than the 100-degree Celsius temperatures at the origin point of most naturally occurring flames.

The hike to view New York’s Eternal Flame Falls is a 40-minute round trip. However, the flame is difficult to access in wet seasons when the river swells to a torrent, so check the weather beforehand.

Natural gas leaks are usually composed of methane, but the gas fueling New York’s Eternal Flame is a unique blend of 35%
