ThE homE kITChEN is no longer a strictly utilitarian workspace—in many homes today the open plan kitchen has become the most important, and lived in room in the house. and since the proverbial heart of the home is now the centerpiece, design decisions impact everything and the kitchen sink. Whether you are a master chef, or aspire to be one, the process of choosing a sink can feel daunting. it doesn’t have to be though—the key to understanding what will work best for your lifestyle is to actually focus on your lifestyle. as Tracy Wynter-ebanks, a Kitchen & Bath designer at the Kohler Signature Store in Paramus, nJ, says, “you have to think beyond the aesthetics as there are so many options in terms of functionality. For instance, for the chef, i would recommend the Kohler Prolific Sink at 33”-wide. it features beveled tiers, and a lot of accessories to create a multipurpose work space.” Wynter-ebanks also suggests selecting the sink in the beginning stages of a kitchen redesign. not only will it determine the type of cabinetry you will want to use, but it will help you focus on countertops that will work best in your kitchen. your space and needs should determine the style, and number, of basins. a smaller kitchen might call for a single basin sink while a larger one gives the homeowner the option to decide on one oversized sink, an equal-sized double basin sink with a Smart divide, or an uneven configuration that allows for one larger sized bowl (perfect to wash large pots and pans in) and a smaller one to hold the clean dishes. next? Pick the material and style that you most appreciate. are you the sleek and modern type? an undermount, in easy-to-clean stainless steel, yields a seamless flow since the edge lip of the sink is mounted below the surface of the countertop. a top-mount design, where the sink’s rims jut over the countertop, offers a traditional look. Meanwhile, the farmhouse sink, or apron- front sink, no longer purely reflects a rural aesthetic. Paired with the fixtures and cabinetry, the result can be a completely modern look. and the farmhouse style sink looks good in all types of materials, from cast-iron to composites. Like every design decision, choosing a sink is an intensely personal process that is all about the details. Form never needed function so much — unless of course it’s just for show. above: The PRolIFIC undermount, single bowl kitchen sink is perfect for the chef—it’s made to function with a variety of accessories including a cutting board and a plastic grate. Today, Kohler co. is a family of global businesses that create and manufacture everything from plumbing products to furniture produced in collaboration with some of the world’s top interior designers and architects. Kohler, Wisconsin is not your average factory town. Besides the 30,000-square-foot Kohler design center, The american club—the Midwest’s only aaa Five diamond-rated resort—and the Kohler Waters Spa, the Kohler empire also includes two world-class golf destinations, Black Wolf Run and Whistling Straits. Both are designed by legendary designer Pete dye, and are award-winning courses that have played host to championship international golf tournaments.

The company also has a long history of innovation and support for the arts, culture, design, and civic responsibility, going back all the way to it’s founder, John Michael Kohler, an immigrant fromaustria who purchased a cast iron and steel foundry in Sheboygan, Wisconsin in 1873. he started by making farm implements and ornamental hitching posts, urns, and cemetery crosses, among other things, but in 1883, he developed an enamel powder, coated a large rectangular basin in the mixture and heated it to 1,700 degrees. The enamel tub became the centerpiece of his fi rst catalog, with a description below the picture that read, “horse Trough/hog Scalder – when furnished with four legs will serve as a bathtub.” John Michael was not only interested in being the king of cast-iron tubs. he was elected mayor of Sheboygan, and built the city’s first opera house. in 1899, he moved the company to Riverside, four miles outside of Sheboygan and away from the labor force and utilities. The local newspaper dubbed the move, “Kohler’s folly.” he died within days of the completion of the new building, and three months later the factory burned to the ground. his sons rebuilt and ran the factory, and in 1905,Walter Kohler was elected president. Walter, who ran the company for 35 years, added ceramic fixtures and brass faucets to the growing product line, and also developed a diesel engine coupled to an alternator, thereby eliminating the need for farmers to purchase expensive batteries. in 1912, the town of Riverside was incorporated as Kohler Village, and Walter eventually built The american club, a temporary home for Kohler co. workers who came from europe to work in the factory. in 1929, he was elected governor of Wisconsin, while continuing to serve as the company’s president.

Kohler continued to grow and expand, developing new technologies and adding new lines of fixtures and hardware for kitchens and baths. Throughout WorldWars i and ii, the company provided support foramerican forces at home and abroad, converting much of their production to the manufacture of military components, as well as plumbing and fixtures for war housing, industries, and hospitals. at the end of WorldWar ii, Kohler became the first company to offer a line of fixtures for small homes, perfect for servicemen returning stateside and searching for housing. in 1964 Kohler debuted self-rimming vitreous china sinks, eliminating the need for a metal frame on the countertop. The following year, they introduced more vibrant “accent” colors, and in 1967 they debuted the slogan, “The Bold Look of Kohler,” which has become its signature statement. in 1969 Kohler joined the space age, manufacturing parts and precision controls, and produced the first fiberglass reinforced plastic bath and shower combinations.

For its entire history, Kohler has also been a supporter of the arts. in 1940, Marie, evangeline, and Lillie Kohler helped to organize The Kohler Foundation, which to this day supports cultural, educational, environmental, and other civic causes. and in 1974, the John Michael Kohler arts center collaborated with Kohler co. to develop the arts/industry program, giving artists from around the world access to the foundry to create original works of art. in 1985, the Kohler design center opened, becoming a design lab and showcase for dramatic innovations and new collaborations with artists and designers in one central location. Kohler co., led by current president and ceo K. david Kohler—the fourth generation of the Kohler family— continues to be an industry leader in innovative technology and environmentally conscious design. The company has received the ePa Water Sense Partner of the year award every year since 2008. and they continue to win design awards for innovations like the Sok overflowing bath and the Karbon line of fully articulated faucets, while also earning accolades for its hospitality arm. in 2012, the american club and Kohler Waters Spa earned their first Forbes Five-Star award. as Kohler co. moves into the future, sustainability continues to be one of their main priorities. They have established a goal of a net zero environmental footprint by 2035, while continuing to live up to their mission of “providing a higher level of gracious living to everyone” touched by the Kohler brand.
