But the future of the industry, one of the
largest private sector employers in the area,
depends on government help.
In a memo issued last week, Leblanc said:
“From the start it was intended they (Heico)
needed the help of the government to
finance the project. For this, the union will
be working with Heico to try and get
financial assistance from the government.
To get financial assistance from the
government means it would reduce the
financial risks for them, it would ensure
the whole project will be carried out as
scheduled and most importantly it would
ensure jobs for the employees and the local
community would be maintained for a
long time.”
Ivaco had announced in an April 12
letter that it was closing the melt shop,
citing the need for “a stable labour
environment so this capital investment
would not be put at any increased risk.”
