Growth Mindset
Do you know what the most important factor in achieving “success” is? Many people often think of a child’s intelligence or their parents’ financial status. However, research by Dr. Carol Dweck has shown that a Growth Mindset is the key factor that enables children to continuously develop themselves, maintain a positive attitude toward obstacles, avoid comparing themselves with others, and have the courage to step out of their comfort zone to face the world—ready to learn from mistakes and grow to their fullest potential. Those with a Growth Mindset believe that they can improve themselves through learning from mistakes, enjoying the process of learning, and recognizing their own self-worth. From nearly 10 years of experience running Growth Mindset camps for youth, Kru Gab has found that Self- Esteem plays a crucial role in building a Growth Mindset in children. Creating a psychologically safe space is essential, where: Children are not judged for who they are There is no comparison or competition They can truly be themselves They have room to make mistakes creatively They are understood and supported In such a psychologically safe environment, children are able to fully express and unlock their inner potential. Sometimes, well-off families can create a vast comfort zone for their children, which might discourage them from stepping out to face the world on their own. Being in a comfort zone is comfortable, but it doesn't truly promote growth.
A fundamental aspect of the SMART-i curriculum that fosters children's growth is the cultivation of positive relationships with older peers and friends at the camp. The trust children develop is rooted in the guiding philosophy: "Students love teachers, and teachers love students." This principle, combined with the creation of a psychologically safe environment, encourages children to open up and engage in enjoyable learning experiences. SMART-i's Growth Mindset Camp provides a supportive atmosphere where children can recognize their own worth, embrace action, and maintain a positive outlook when facing challenges. It is essential for every child to internalize the belief that "they can do it." By understanding that perseverance leads to improvement and achievement, children build confidence and develop a growth- oriented mindset that is valuable not only in learning but also in navigating real-life situations.
