THE RAREST JEWEL Religious and civil authorities in Austria, during the mid-thirteenth century, made it impossible for an evangelical group known as the Wal- densians to distribute portions of Scripture. These zealous believers, however, were not easily thwarted. Many of them, shoemakers, farmers, weavers and from other professions, would assume the role of peddlers going from door to door plying their trade. As they displayed their finest wares or merchandise, they usually concluded by saying, “I have saved the best till last.” As an example, if it was a Christian jeweler he might explain, “j have one precious jewel yet remaining. Through it you can see God and have love kindled toward Him in your heart." Finding interest and enthusiasm awakened, the Wal- densian lay missionary would reach into his robe and produce a roll of some precious portion of God’s Word. Many years later, in memory of these incidents, John Greenleaf Whittier penned these beautiful words, “O Lady fair, I have yet a gem, which a purer luster flings, Than the diamond flash of the jeweled crown on the lofty brow of kings, A wonderful pearl of exceeding price, whose virtue shall not de cay, Whose light shall be as a spell to thee and a blessing on thy way.” The cloud went off from the pil grim’s brow as a small meager book, Unchased with gold or gem of cost, from his folding robe he took. “Here, lady fair, is the pearl of price, may it prove as much to thee. Nay, keep thy gold, I ask it not, for the Word of God is free.”

PROUD OF KNOWLEDGE Psychologists tell us that one of the most distasteful characteristics to be found in people is false pride or self-styled piety. This certainly coin cides with the Bible, for the moment we become any more than humble in struments in the hands of God we will be obnoxious to others. God does not put a price on ignor ance, nor does He put a premium on education. A learned preacher was once met by a man who had little experience in schools of higher learn ing. But, unfortunately, he was quite proud of the fact that he could speak and think nothing of it. (Some of the people who heard him felt the same way.) He came to the man of God and said, " I understand you have been to college and even studied in a seminary. I ’d like you to know how thankful I am that the Lord opened my mouth without any learning what soever.” The Christian leader smiled kindly and responded, “ That’s most interesting, friend, because a similar event took place in Baalam’s day with his animal. Such things are infre quent occurances but perhaps you are one of God’s rareities.” We can thank God that He uses men who have had little schooling, but we also know the importance for a workman to study so that he may show himself approved unto God, not ashamed of his position in Christ, but rather rightly dividing the Word of truth.
