GOOD NEWS!
… as I am sure you know, the professionals actually work for YOU!”
PROFESSIONALS MIGHT BE GETTING IT! Back in the day (and as a dad, I do love beginning with that phrase), professionals used to have different rules. Your doctor, lawyer, CPA, financial advisor, and even your car mechanic sometimes just weren’t normal people! They were … the professionals! Impressive. But not really accessible. There was a weird atmosphere in their offices that said, “I am the big bad professional who went to school, and you are not; therefore, whatever I say, and however I say it, is right because I am always right … and you are not … because you are not the professional! Trust me
and do what I say.” Wow, it was a little bit like, let them eat cake, the peasants!
Well, really … as I am sure you know, the professionals actually work for YOU! Now, they aren’t on your personal staff to be berated and treated badly, of course, but if there’s not mutual respect going on, we peasants know we have options these days! I will tell you right now, as if you didn’t know, there are a lot of lawyers out there! A couple of things come to mind that have helped: the internet, for one. There are tons of options more readily available, and you can research the professional and their office better. I heard one judge say to a criminal defendant that lawyers come in all “shapes and sizes,” so surely you can find one you like around here somewhere! The ability to review a professional and their office has also helped. Now, there are crazies who will use a review for the wrong reasons, but still, reviews are a data point for consumers looking to find the right professional for them. If your professional isn’t reviewed well, no matter what, that’s a thing. Our firm is growing, not because we’re the smartest lawyers in town (maybe!), not because we’ve been around the longest, and not because we are the best looking (arguable!), but because — and I hear this so often — when you come here, you are treated with kindness, honor, and the respect you deserve, and we go about solving your problem. You Matter Here. Welcome Home.
LOVE LAWYERS AGAIN (www.GetUsedToDi fferent.com) Q: Why are most law firms frustrating? A: We have no idea!

Fun for All This Fall 5 CORN MAZE SAFETY TIPS Fall brings apple cider, pumpkin patches, fun seasonal outfits, and corn mazes. Unless you are visiting a “haunted” corn maze, you and your family probably won’t be chased by a chainsaw-wielding serial killer while you try to navigate through. However, safety risks are still present. Here are five safety tips to keep the fun coming during your next corn maze experience. Follow the rules. At the entrance to each corn maze, there should be a sign stating the rules for visitors. For the safety of yourself, your children, and others, be sure to read each rule and follow along. Always accompany your kids in the corn maze — it is a maze, after all! Watch for tripping and fire hazards. Keep your eyes peeled for any obstacles on the path, including holes, bumps, ruts, and corn stalks. While navigating a maze, it can be easy to forget to look down while searching for the exit. To prevent fires, you should also avoid smoking and never use matches or lighters. Wear proper footwear. Ensure that you and your family all have proper footwear, preferably closed-toed shoes, while exploring the maze. You never know what kind of critters or potentially harmful hazards may appear in your path. Eat beforehand and stay hydrated. Be sure to eat before setting out into the maze and don’t bring any glass bottles with you, as it can be dangerous if broken. Furthermore, do not consume alcohol before or while enjoying your time at the corn maze. Be prepared. Accidents can happen, usually at the most unexpected times! It is important to always have a first-aid kit handy. Be sure to call 911 in an emergency and let staff know what is going on.
“The Holcomb law firmwas very quick and responsive even during this difficult time. Katherine Nace consulted with us on a very odd and difficult family situation and was able to provide us with great guidance and support. Should our issue need to be pursued, we will surely continue to use Holcomb. We feel that we are in the best of hands.” –Lindsy B. “My experience with Holcomb Law could not have been better. They responded immediately and showed great knowledge and interest in my situation and resulted in the decision going my way. I would highly recommend and will recommend them to any of my friends who find themselves in need of their service!” –Ronald V.
As long as safety is the top priority this fall, fun will be had by all!

training in child development and family dynamics and dysfunction, and I can help you protect your children.
Like many of you, Virginia is not my first home. I was born in Louisiana “‘round da bayou.” I was born at a time when people who looked like me lived on “our side” of the levy and went to “our” schools. Men in fancy suits would come and sit in the living room with my papa. They talked about two things, changing the “rules” that kept us separated by that levy and MaDear's peach cobbler. That cobbler was legendary! Around the age of 4, I learned that those men in fancy suits were called “lawyers,” and they went to a place called “court” to change those “rules.” They talked about a lawyer named Thurgood Marshall who became the first African American Justice to serve on the United States Supreme Court in 1967, the year that I was born. I suppose that's why I've never wanted to be anything other than a lawyer. When I'm not lawyerin', I'm screaming all of the lyrics to my favorite songs at a live concert. Music is my Prozac! And when I'm not chasing pop stars, I'm planning my next trip to Disney World. I've served my community for more than 30 years as a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. I am a proud alumna of The Alma Mater of a Nation, The College of William and Mary, and I continue to support the Tribe as a Class Ambassador for the Class of 1989. And as a 1992 graduate of Tulane University Law School, I know what it means to miss New Orleans. Roll Wave!
Like every woman lucky enough to have been born in Louisiana, I love to cook. My peach cobbler is not as legendary as MaDear's, but I fix a mean pot of gumbo!

Spotlight On ATTORNEY DEE VANTREE-KELLER
I count motherhood as my greatest accomplishment, and I prefer the titles “Dance Mom,” “Cheer Mom,” and “Volleyball Mom” to “Esquire.” God has entrusted my husband and me with two amazing daughters, and I never wanted to miss a moment of the precious years of childhood. So, for the past 18 years, I have been a solo practitioner operating as DVKLAW. I've made every awards assembly, science fair, sporting event, and recital, and I have never missed an opportunity to chaperon a field trip or to serve as “Room Mom” or “Team Mom.” Whew! But now that my children are older, and I'm more of a “smother” than a “mother,” I thought it was time to do the thing that Wayne and I have talked about for years now — merging our firms. I am so excited for the merger of DVKLAW and Holcomb Law!
I have practiced law for over 25 years. My primary practice areas are criminal defense and family law. I spent six years honing my trial skills as a prosecutor for the city of Hampton, and I am regarded as a specialist in juvenile criminal defense. I have served as special counsel for the Division of Child Support Enforcement, and I can help you navigate Virginia's complex child support provisions and safeguard your financial future. I have been certified by the Virginia Supreme Court to serve as a guardian ad litem for children since 2002, so I am well equipped to assist you in highly contested custody cases. I have received hundreds of hours of
