tainerboard (i.e. corrugated boxes), 12.6 percent to produce boxboard (folding boxes like cereal or med- icine boxes, and gypsum wallboard, i.e. drywall/ fac- ings.), 8 percent for tissue and 5.6 percent for news- print. Exports accounted for 32.2 percent, down from 35.7 percent in 2019.Recycling one ton of paper saves 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space.15 Approximately 80 percent of all U.S. paper mills use some recovered fiber to make everything from pa- per-based packaging to tissue products to office paper and newspaper. Commingled Collection In some places, municipalities are increasingly ask- ing households to combine all recyclable materials into a single collection container, a method called sin- gle stream, single sort or commingled recycling. Com- mingled recycling has contributed to higher recovery rates, making more recovered fiber available, but it has also significantly and adversely affected fiber quality. The trend toward commingled collection has also complicated efforts to increase the use of recovered fiber in grades with high fiber quality requirements. A study of the impact of commingled collection in the UK, for instance, revealed that “…the quality of re- covered paper from commingled systems is very far from the quality obtained with selective systems.” Generally speaking, recovered fiber can only be used to produce new paper of an equal or lower grade. The U.S. paper industry continues to demonstrate recycling leadership, with $4.1 billion in manufactur- ing infrastructure investments announced, planned or made from 2019-2023, to continue the best use of re- cycled fiber.
