Hello to our Lakes families,
14
What’s on @ The Lakes
It is with great pleasure that I get to share The Lakes 2024 NAPLAN results for the Primary Campus. In the domains of Reading, Writing, Spelling, Grammar & Punctuation, The Lakes scored higher when compared with similar schools and network schools across Victoria, in both Years 3 and 5. In Numeracy, we were well ahead in Year 5, with comparatively similar scores in Year 3. This is an outstanding result for our school, and shows the tireless work our staff, students and community are putting in to make our school a high achieving school. This NAPLAN result is also in line with our excellent Attitudes to School data our students give on top of the already strong Staff Opinion and Parent/Carer Opinion Survey data.

Year 7 - 9 NAPLAN data this year has continued to show a positive trend in student results. We continue to have high percentages of students in the Exceeding and Strong bands. Spelling and Grammar are 2 specific areas where we have seen significant student improvement with our results both equalling and outperforming similar and network schools. Our Year 9’s outperformed network schools in all areas of Literacy.

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter PRINCIPAL REPORT
In terms of growth, where students data is tracked for improvement from Years 7 to 9 we had 8% of students showing high growth in Reading from Years 7 to 9. Teacher judgement continues to show a high correlation between NAPLAN results and Teacher Judgement. This is an important point as it means that teachers are competently identifying student capacities and are providing programs of learning that are ‘just right’ for progressing student learning. We look forward to looking at the data provided from NAPLAN closely in order to maintain a consistent approach of improving practice in order to optimise student learning. BOOK WEEK PARADE During Week 6, we enjoyed a wonderful celebration of Book Week 2024. For me, these types of activities and events are what school is all about. Dressing up on special days is such a fun way to enjoy and promote a love of reading. It was certainly wonderful seeing everyone dressed up for the parade, and the staff and student costumes were simply amazing. A big shout out to all our parents and carers for supporting our students to source or make costumes and getting fully into the spirit of the event. This is not always an easy thing to do but know your commitment was worth it. The Children’s Book Council of Australia presents annual awards to books of literary merit, for outstanding contribution to Australian children's literature. Congratulations to all the winners of the 2024 Children’s Book Council of Australia Awards. Many of the books are available in the school library for our students to enjoy. Book week is also a great opportunity to acknowledge and thank Megan De Marco for her work in our school Library – you are awesome Megan! PRIMARY LEARNER AGENCY CONFERENCES – TUESDAY 17TH SEPTEMBER We have our Primary Learner Agency Conferences being held on Tuesday 17th September between 10.30am - 6.30pm. Our Primary Learner Agency Conferences are a terrific way for us to build our school and home partnership. This is another opportunity for you to engage with your child and their teacher to review learning progress made and set new goals for the remainder of this year. Over recent years we have taken on feedback from students and parents/ carers and have worked together as a staff to develop consistent proformas that are used across the school. These are designed to support our students to be actively directing and taking responsibility for their learning. Having
this agency will allow students to develop into independent, curious and reflective learners. Tuesday 17th September is a School Council approved alteration to normal school attendance day. Students are only required to be at school during their own Conference time. 100 DAYS OF SCHOOL CELEBRATION Our Prep and Year 7 students celebrated their first 100 days of school this week. When l walk into the classrooms each day, we always see our students engaged and active in their learning. One thing that is very noticeable with these groups is their enthusiasm, sense of wonder and inquiry and their terrific energy. This is great credit to the wonderful Prep and Year 7 teams, who go above and beyond for their students. FATHERS & SPECIAL PERSONS DAY BREAKFAST Thank you to our Parent/Carer Fundraising Committee who did an outstanding job in setting up and cooking over 250 Egg and Bacon rolls for all our wonderful fathers and special friends last Friday. A massive shout out to our small but hardworking parent/carer team. ROAD SAFETY - IT IS YOUR JOB TO ENSURE YOUR CHILD GETS TO SCHOOL SAFELY Disappointingly, we are seeing several students not wearing helmets when riding their bikes/scooters to and from school. We would like to remind everyone that parents/carers have the legal responsibility to ensure children are wearing helmets. We do not want any of our students to be at risk. Our younger students do not always have the capacity or situational awareness to be safe on the road and wearing helmets is a must. We have also asked for the support of our local Police including the Highway Patrol to see if they have the resources to conduct general patrols around drop off and pick up times so that the importance of this message is reinforced.
Have a great weekend!!

STUDENT PERSPECTIVE
YEAR 3 REFLECTION OLIVIA & KRISH YEAR 3 SRC
Term 3 has been packed with exciting learning and fun activities! In Inquiry, we’ve been diving into how the Australian government works and what democracy is all about. We’ve learned about different leaders and their roles in making decisions for our country. It’s been interesting to see how everything comes together in our government! Our reading sessions have been interesting too. We’ve been focusing on nonfiction books and discovering how to use text features like headings and captions to find information more easily. This has made our reading sessions both more interesting and useful. Tuesdays have been extra special with our swimming lessons. We’ve had so much fun in the pool, improving our swimming skills and enjoying the time with our friends. It’s definitely been a highlight of our week. We also had to say goodbye to Mrs Stockley, who has left to have her second baby. We’re really going to
miss her and wish her all the best in this exciting new chapter of her life. Looking ahead, we’re excited about the democracy incursion coming up. It’s going to be a fantastic opportunity to explore democracy even more and have some hands - on fun with what we’ve learned. Our learner agency hour has been another great part of the term. Krish has been enjoying the Kahoot Club, while I’ve (Olivia) had a blast in the Comic Club. It’s been so cool to explore new interests and work with different teachers and students. Overall, Term 3 has been a wonderful mix of learning and fun experiences. We can’t wait to see what’s coming up next in Term 4! We’re excited to dress up in our sport colours on Thursday 19th September for our Footy Day too! Also.... Primary SRC students have decided on a day for our 2024 Colour Run spectacular! Don’t forget to pencil in our colour run for November 28th! How exciting! Watch this space...
YEAR 10 REFLECTION HASTI & ZAF YEAR 10 SRC
This term has been packed with exciting activities and achievements. Our psychology class along with the Year 10 students had the opportunity to attend the Inside Out 2 excursion, offering valuable insights into emotional and mental processes, connecting perfectly with our studies. In sports, our basketball team participated in the Interschool sports competition, showcasing great teamwork and dedication. Another highlight was the Wakkakiri dance, where our talented group made it to the finals, reflecting their hard work and creativity. It's been a dynamic and rewarding term, with so much to celebrate.
As the term comes to an end, the year 10s are off to work experience. Work experience is an exciting opportunity for students to step into the professional world and gain practical insights into a chosen field. It offers a chance to apply theoretical knowledge to real - world tasks, develop new skills, and build confidence in a workplace setting. Engaging with professionals provides valuable networking opportunities and a deeper understanding of potential career paths. It's a time for students to observe, learn, and reflect on personal strengths and interests, shaping future educational and career choices.

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFAST
Last Friday saw another awesome turn out to the parent/carer fundraising team’s annual Father’s Day Breakfast, held to celebrate all of the dads and special persons in our school community. It was wonderful to see so many attend the early start, in what ended up being perfect weather of sunshine and blue sky, despite the forecast threat of wind and rain. Our Dads and Special Persons enjoyed egg and bacon rolls and a complimentary coffee, followed by fun activities such as bocce, coits and rubber chicken throwing! It was a fantastic morning with lots of positive feedback from those who attended! A particular thank you to Mr Abney - Hastings and parents Grant Voss and Briohny Voss who cooked up an estimated 250 eggs and pieces of bacon; the remaining parent/carer volunteers for the shopping legwork, organising the photo booth and outdoor activities; and serving; and to the staff who assisted both on the day and behind the scenes. Our parent/carer volunteers are amazing and contribute a huge amount of their own time to be able to deliver these events. I would also like to acknowledge and thank Bakers Delight at Westfield Plenty Valley and Altomonte Farms in Donnybrook for their generous contributions towards supplying the bread rolls and eggs; and Camp Australia for sponsoring the coffee van. The gold coin donations collected will go towards purchasing outdoor yard activities on both campuses.
Hope everyone had a lovely Father’s Day on Sunday and the fundraising team look forward to seeing everyone again at next years breakfast!
Cheers,
Amanda Farrelly School Council President

The Lakes South Morang College Newsletter COLLEGE CONNECTIONS
Last week our school staff attended a transformative conference focused on “Aiming High – Building a Culture of High Performance.” One of the most impactful insights we took away from this experience was a powerful statement made by Footscray High School Executive Principal, Frank Vetere: “Be the best at getting better.” This idea resonates deeply with our commitment to continuous improvement and aligns perfectly with our core values: Learning, Leadership, Teamwork, and Respect. Here’s how we can integrate this philosophy into every facet of our school community: Learning: At the heart of our educational journey is the pursuit of knowledge and growth. “Be the best at getting better” encourages each of us — students, teachers, and families — to adopt a mindset of relentless curiosity and self - improvement. For students, this means embracing challenges and viewing mistakes as opportunities to learn. For teachers, it means continually refining our teaching methods and staying abreast of innovative practices. For parents/carers, it involves supporting and nurturing a growth mindset at home. Leadership: Effective leadership is about inspiring others to reach their full potential. By focusing on being the best at getting better, we challenge our leaders — whether they are students taking on new responsibilities, teachers guiding their classrooms, or parents/carers leading by example — to set high standards and strive for personal and collective efficacy. True leadership is demonstrated through our commitment to ongoing development and the encouragement of others to do the same.
Teamwork: Our collaborative efforts are fundamental to our success. “Be the best at getting better” applies to how we work together as a team. This means fostering an environment where everyone — students, teachers, and parents/ carers — supports one another’s growth and celebrates each step of progress. By working collaboratively and constructively, we enhance our collective ability to achieve excellence. Respect: Respecting ourselves and others means recognising and valuing each person’s journey toward improvement. This principle calls us to appreciate the efforts of others and to provide constructive feedback that supports their growth. It involves acknowledging the strengths and potential of every member of our community and encouraging them to continue striving for excellence. As we integrate this philosophy into our daily routines, let us remember that ‘being the best at getting better’ is a continuous process, not a final destination. It’s about setting ambitious goals, being open to feedback, and supporting each other in our collective pursuit of excellence. Together, we can build a culture where high performance is not just an aspiration but a reality.

http://www.thelakes.edu.au/uploads/8/3/9/0/83901006/personal_property_policy_2022.pdf
The Lakes understands that students may sometimes like to bring items of personal property to school. The Department of Education and Training does not have insurance for personal property of staff, students and visitors. The Lakes does not take responsibility for items of personal property that are lost, stolen or damaged at school or during school activities. Damage to personal property brought to school is the responsibility of the owner of that property. The Lakes South Morang College encourages students not to bring items of value to school, or to obtain appropriate insurance for such items. If students bring items of value to school, they should be handed to school administration for secure storage at the office until the end of the day, when the items may be collected by the student and/or parent/carer.

If you would like to apply for the first time, please contact the College on 9404 9000 and ask for an application form. You can also download the form, and find out more about the program and eligibility, on the Department of Education and Training’s Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund web page. Payments are made direct to the school to use towards expenses relating to camps, excursions, and sporting activities for the benefit of your child. Foundation and Year 7 government school students who are CSEF recipients are also eligible for a uniform voucher. Schools are required to make applications on behalf of parents, so please register your interest at the school.
